Assistant professor/post doc in "Phages targeting antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus"

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic assistant professor/post doc for a 2.5 year position to commence 1 January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is funded by a grant from the Danish Council for Independent Research entitled "Bacterial viruses targeting antibiotic resistance" and it aims to characterize common targets for bacterial viruses (phages) and antibiotics in the human pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus.

Our research
Our research spans antibiotic resistance, quorum sensing and impact of phages on staphylococcal biology. We focus on an inclusive environment and while striving for novel scientific insights we prioritize having fun at the same time.

Your job

Your tasks in the project will be to conduct evolution studies of Staphylococcus aureus and examine how phages and cell-wall targeting antibiotics impact phage/antibiotic resistance and cross-susceptibility.

If employed at the assistant professor level the responsibilities will primarily consist of:

• research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
• research-based teaching
• sharing knowledge with society
• participation in formal pedagogical training program

In general, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

• You have a PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, biology or biochemistry
• You are highly experienced in working with phages and mobile genetic elements
• You are highly experienced in working with human pathogens
• You have proficient communication skills
• You enjoy teamwork
• You have excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

• You have worked with Staphylococcus aureus and its mobile genetic elements
• You are experienced in whole genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Frederiksberg University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and BSL2 facilities for genetic manipulations of pathogens.

Terms of employment

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2.5 years. The start date is 1 January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or another relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,000 DKK/approx. 4,700 EUR (October 2021 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
