A Postdoctoral position in Cellular Stress Signaling at Center for Healthy Aging, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 13 Oct 2022

A postdoctoral position is available in Cellular Stress Signalingat Center for Healthy Aging at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM ).
The position is for 2 years and is available from 1 December 2022 or upon agreement.

Job description
The healthy life of the human organism depends on the long-term fitness of its smallest basal constituents, our cells. When deregulated, the pathologic accumulation of genetic mutations and malfunctioning macromolecules alters or compromises cellular function to promote cancer or premature ageing. Conversely, normal ageing of the human organism is associated with the time-dependent decrease in cellular fitness, caused by gradual loss of genomic integrity, and accumulation of misfolded and dysfunctional macromolecules. To protect cells from harmful environmental effects, all organisms have developed elaborate surveillance and response mechanisms to counteract such threats.

The aim of the research group is to understand the molecular details of these pathways, with an emphasis on MAP kinase induced cellular stress responses. Such work is expected to uncover novel insights into the all-important mechanisms of cellular maintenance and adaptation, which may ultimately be exploited therapeutically to prevent or remedy aging-related diseases.

We have recently uncovered an unexpected role for ribosomal stress signaling pathways in metabolic regulation in diverse mouse tissues. Using our different mouse knockout lines, the candidate is expected to contribute to the further characterization of these metabolic defects. The precise contents of the postdoc project will be defined through discussions with the selected candidate.

Scientific environment
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM) offers an ambitious scientific environment, with many different nationalities represented. ICMM aims to produce research with high international impact focusing on the functional cell, its genetic components, and molecular cellular mechanisms in a medical context.
ICMM currently comprises five research programmes, three high profile Research Centers as well as a number of international research groups. The scientists at ICMM are involved in high quality research based undergraduate and graduate teaching programs at the University of Copenhagen.

The University of Copenhagen encourages career development of its postdoctoral fellows, and the position carries an obligation to conduct some undergraduate teaching and associated examinations within the Medical School.

Highly motivated and ambitious candidates are encouraged to apply.

Required qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in biomedicine or equivalent relevant discipline.
  • Experience with animal work.
  • Knowledge of techniques such as establishment of intestinal organoids, isolation of primary hepatocytes and metabolic characterization of mice will be considered a distinct advantage but is not a requirement.
  • Proven ability to present and publish research data.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week. The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years.
