Associate professor of Medical Image Analysis

We are looking for an outstanding, experienced researcher with an innovative mindset and intellectual curiosity to strengthen and complement the research profile of the department's Section for Image Analysis, Mathematical Modelling and Geometry (IMAGE). The section's research is concerned with all aspects of image analysis, including bioimaging, medical image analysis, computer vision, machine learning, their mathematical foundation, and their application. Furthermore, the section does research within biomedical simulation, soft robotics, and bioinformatics.

It is a high priority at the Department of Computer Science to foster a research environment of highest excellence allowing people from diverse backgrounds to thrive. Applicants are expected to have a strong publication record in the general area of medical image analysis, including research publications at premier venues within the area such as MICCAI, Medical Physics, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Information Processing in Medical Imaging: (IPMI), Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeuIPS). All areas of applications will be considered. Research areas of special interest include:

• Foundational and applied research on medical image segmentation, registration, and shape modelling.
• Analysis of advanced image data types such as multimodal images (e.g. combined MR/PET) and imaging of complex structures (e.g. airway CT).
• Focus on strong clinical applications with high societal impact, such a radiation therapy, lung, and brain diseases.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

The position can imply teaching in topics areas such as:

• Basic and advanced methods in medical image analysis and related areas.
• Learning techniques for imaging in general.
• Applied programming in high-level languages such as C++, Python or similar.
• Further or continued education.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The Section for Image Analysis, Mathematical Modelling and Geometry (IMAGE) has strong connections to Danish hospitals. We are member of several centers such as the Pioneer center, the SCIENCE AI center, Danish and Euro Bioimaging, and has strong ties to the nearby MAXIV synchrotron and the European Spallation Source all of which offers a multitude of funding possibilities and collaborations. The IMAGE section attracts student with strong programming skills and good mathematical mindsets from, e.g., computer science, bioinformatics, physics. Further, the IMAGE section is responsible for several specialized course in area relevant to medical image analysis, where there will be opportunities for integrating own research interests into the teaching and recruit students.
