Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 24 Oct 2021

Professor of Silviculture<
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management

Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

Silviculture as scientific discipline supports knowledge-based interventions in forest structures, with the objective to meet present and future needs for sustainable forest ecosystems and ecosystem services. These services include traditional products such as wood, biomass and fibre, as well as other important services like biodiversity, climate regulation, water and cultural services. Silviculture has never been more important than now, with forests being called upon to mitigate climate challenges and biodiversity decline, and to provide sustainable products as part of the green economy. Forests and forestry is challenged by exogenous disturbances enlarged by our changing climate including hurricanes, elevated temperatures, prolonged droughts, excessive precipitation, altered seasonality and changing behaviour of pests and diseases. The effects are particularly severe in the long-lived woody plants that define our forest ecosystems.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should be internationally recognized within the field of silvicultural science with special focus on several of the following:

  • Management and manipulation of forests and forest structures to obtain specific goals.
  • Assessment and modelling of attributes of forest ecosystems in the context of sustainable resources, biodiversity or climate benefits.
  • Forest dynamics and recovery following interventions or natural disturbances.
  • Forest restoration or agroforestry systems.
  • Production, growth and tending of forest stands.
  • Novel technical and statistical approaches scaling from the level of individual trees to forest landscapes.

As full professor, you must be an internationally recognized researcher with a strong international network and documented contribution to and clear visions for the development of the broad field of your research area. We expect that you are creative and able to demonstrate innovative approaches to your own research that will inspire colleagues and generate high level research applications and generate high impact and senior authored publications as well as popular science communication and public/private advisory services. You must demonstrate good ability for attracting national and international research funding as well as have experience with research leadership, including mentoring of early career researchers.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Moreover, you are expected to have shown leadership in developing and implementing educational programmes within the research fields. You will also contribute to the development and execution of continued education programmes for non-university partners in government, civil society and the private sector.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
