At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Postdoc for up to two years in Probabilistic Risk Assessment in Modern Power Systems is open for appointment from 1. May 2023 or soon hereafter and is fixed for 2 years.
Job description
Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration. Aalborg University educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.
AAU Energy is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings. AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Aalborg.
The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.
Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.
The position is offered in relation to the research programme Power Electronic Control Reliability and System Optimization and the Postdoc will be positioned to the section for Applied for Power Electronics. Research areas will be within Reliability and Risk Assessment in Modern Power Systems.
The position is part of Pro-Risk: mathematical methods for Probabilistic Risk modeling of green electric power systems, which is granted by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) under Green Research scheme running from 2023 to 2026. The candidate may have a short visiting stay at another university.
The main goal of the project is to model the risk of modern power systems with probabilistic methods considering the known and unknown uncertainties. Modern power systems face various uncertainties including variable energy sources like solar and wind power plants, early life and aging failures of new technologies with time-variant hazard rates, uncertain demand from high-penetration of electric vehicles, etc. The conventional risk modeling approaches are modeling the average risk of the system without taking into account the characteristics of the uncertainties. This projects seeks building new methods for accurate and agile risk modeling in large scale power systems with probabilistic methods. In this project, the applicant is expected to work on the following objectives:
- Analytical and probabilistic models for risk assessment with known and unknown uncertainties,
- Application of the built models for power systems with high penetration of renewable generations
- Assessing the performance of the model with standard test systems.
- Motivation and potential for research activities. Ability to work independently and in a team. Be innovative and creative. Keep an open mind.
- Expertise with the following topics: Reliability and Risk Assessment in Power System, Reliability Engineering, Probability Theories and Uncertainty Analysis, Design and Planning of Power Systems.
- Expertise with the following engineering tools and programming languages: Optimization, MATLAB/ Python.
- Prior experience on any of these topics will be valued: Control and Operation of Renewable Power Plants.
- Excellent English language skills (both oral and written).
- Publications in international journals/conferences in the field of power system reliability.
You may obtain further professional information from Assistant Professor Saeed Peyghami, email: [email protected].
Qualification requirements:
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
The application must contain the following:
- A motivated text wherein the reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position are stated.
- A current curriculum vitae.
- Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
- Scientific qualifications. A complete list of publications must be attached with an indication of the works the applicant wishes to be considered. You may attach up to 5 publications.
- Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
- Additional qualifications in relation to the position. References/recommendations.
- Personal data.
- Project description (4-5 pages), which describes the applicant’s initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art (including short list of references), a time schedule and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives.
The applications are only to be submitted online by using the "Apply online" button below.
Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed.
