At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Computer Science, a postdoc position is available within the Computer Science study program at Aalborg University, commencing on February 1, 2023 or shortly thereafter. The duration of the position is three years. The selected candidate will be working on Human-Computer Interaction / Human-Centred AI within a project which aims to make AI-driven decision-making more transparent to the public. The project is funded by a Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship (‘Algorithmic Explainability for Everyday Citizens’ CF21-0159). The Department of Computer Science features a broad range of synergistic activities within research and education in the general area of computer science, including curiosity-driven research and targeted research in collaboration with industrial partners, as well as traditional university education, with a unique problem- and project-based focus, and continued education and knowledge dissemination. Job description

In this project, we will establish a thorough understanding of the needs of citizens in making sense of explanations on algorithmic-driven decisions and contribute a software platform that supports this aim. As such, the project leans heavily on interdisciplinarity, which is expected to be reflected in the profile of the applicant. In particular, proven experience and/or interest in the area of Human-Centred AI is desired.

In addition to the postdoc, the team consists of three PhD students, a research assistant, and the principal investigator, Associate Professor Niels van Berkel. The project offers a large amount of freedom and autonomy in terms of research directions within the umbrella of Human-Computer Interaction. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on venues such as CHI, CSCW, IUI, TOCHI, IJHCS, and the HCI journal.

The selected candidate will be part of the Human-Centered Computing research group, an ambitious and supportive research environment in which we study the design, development, and use of interactive computer systems through empirical and experimental methods. The group operates at the intersection between psychology and the social sciences, on the one hand, and computer science and technology, on the other.

The applicants with a PhD degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, or a closely related field are preferred. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential.

This description should outline the applicant’s thoughts and ideas on possible research directions within the context of the topic outlined above.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
