2 Postdocs in Genome Engineering

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 20 Oct 2021

Do you want to break new ground within biotechnology?

If your field of expertise is synthetic/molecular/microbiology or related and you are looking for the best place to unfold and elevate your skills, you do not need to look any further. In this job you will get the opportunity to work at the very forefront of scientific knowledge and break new ground. And you will do it in a top-class R&D team headed by Morten Nørholm at DTU Biosustain’s state-of-the-art facilities at the Danish Technical University’s main campus in Copenhagen.

At DTU Biosustain we develop the next generation (bio) technology using synthetic biology techniques. We create novel methods and technologies as a foundation for development of new environment friendly products, better and less energy consuming manufacturing processes, new medical treatments, climate friendly farming, etc. In other words, we try to solve some of the biggest challenges in the history of mankind, and you will get the chance to add your personal mark to this.

Genome engineering and experimental evolution approaches
You will join a diverse and highly skilled team of scientists working with synthetic biology, protein production, and molecular evolution. Your focus will be genome engineering (e.g. CRISPR) and experimental evolution approaches for studying microbial cell factories. As part of a large-scale integrating project you will develop true genome engineering, e.g.:

  • Develop, implement, and apply genome reduction techniques to generate minimal genomes in the model bacterium Escherichia coli
  • Implement large scale genome editing for inserting 100Kb segments into the E. coli genome
  • Evaluate the orthogonality of independently-modulated gene sets (iModulons)
  • Re-engineer and optimize genomes using laboratory evolution

PhD in synthetic/molecular/microbiology or related

We are looking for two colleagues that share our passion for biotechnology and that like to create results via good and positive team work. As part of this you must thrive in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural and highly interactive environment where knowledge sharing and collaboration are key to succeed. As you will have a central role in the new team, you must be very good at planning not only your own tasks but also in projects involving multiple stakeholders. Additionally, your CV comprises:

  • PhD degree in synthetic/molecular/microbiology or related discipline
  • Motivation for developing your skills within microbial genetic engineering and/or experimental evolution

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain)
Recent progress in our ability to read and write genomic code, combined with advances in automation, analytics and data science, has fundamentally changed the scope and ambition of harnessing the potential of biological systems. Big data approaches and analysis of biological systems are key research instruments at the Center. DTU Biosustain utilizes these advances for microbial cell factory design to foster sustainable lifestyles in relation to three application areas: Sustainable Chemicals, Natural Products, and Microbial Foods.
