Professor of Veterinary Pediatrics
Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint a professor to the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to commence 1st July 2023 or as soon as possible.

Information on the department can be found at: https://ivh.ku.dk/

Our research
We offer a highly international, diverse and interdisciplinary research environment in the Section of Comparative Pediatrics and Nutrition. Our aim is to improve the survival and health of fetal, newborn and young animals and humans. We perform research and teaching related to development, nutrition, pharmacology and diseases just before or after birth, and in the pediatric period. Our work covers basic in vitro studies on cells and tissues, animal model studies (mainly in piglets) and studies in infants at hospitals.

Job description
The perinatal period is associated with the highest morbidity and mortality across mammals. The highest level of scientific knowledge must be applied to support survival and growth in the period around birth and through the animals’ early life period. Veterinary Pediatrics focuses on biological challenges in early life and relates closely to other veterinary fields, such as Veterinary Reproduction and Obstetrics, Animal Nutrition and Production, Veterinary Clinical Medicine. In humans, a range of medical sub-specialties covers the period from foetuses to children. This allows human pediatrics to inspire veterinary paediatrics (and vice versa). The present position aims to cover farm and pet animal comparative paediatrics, based on scientific knowledge and research obtained from both animals and infants. When considering applications for the professorship, emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of Veterinary Pediatrics.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criterion here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit .

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

The position is a permanent position.

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
