BRIC wishes to recruit 1-2 strongly motivated associate professors and/or professors for an independent research group leader position(s). We are seeking candidates with ambitious research visions within the broad area of basic biomedical research and a drive to contribute to a diverse and inspiring research environment.

The workplace
BRIC is an international center of excellence with the mission to perform cutting-edge basic and translational biomedical research in an open environment that fosters interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Active research areas include many aspects of cancer biology, stem cell biology and neurobiology. The center is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The job
As a group leader, you will establish an independent research program within basic or translational biomedical research. In the job, you will be expected to conduct, publish and communicate high-quality research that moves the field forward and to develop your research group through attraction of competitive funding and talent development of team members. Also, you will involve in local as well as international collaborative and multidisciplinary research projects and engage in core center activities such as talent or technology development to advance BRIC’s research environment and culture. Initial appointment as an associate professor (group leader) is for 6 years, which may be made permanent upon a positive evaluation following transparent guidelines. Experienced research leaders may be recruited as a permanent professor (group leader).

The candidate’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Professor: Research-based public-sector consultancy may be required

The candidate profile
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, the successful associate professor must be able to document:

  • PhD degree
  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • A track record documenting your research experience as reflected in a strong publication record matching associate professor’s level
  • Research-based teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies

Furthermore, the successful professor must be able to document:

  • PhD degree
  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • A track record documenting your research experience as reflected in a strong publication record matching professor’s level
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Research-based teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies

Also desired is a successful record of attraction of funds, leadership and educational experiences, collaboration experiences and additional capabilities within areas such outreach or technology transfer activities, reflecting your career stage. 

The associate professor/professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The associate professor position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 6 years.

The professor position is a permanent position.

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post.
