The Institute of Biotechnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences announces an open competition in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 Coll. on the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Statutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences for a position:
Postdoctoral position in Laboratory of Reproductive Biology
Job description: The Postdoctoral Fellow will mainly be responsible for a project which targets to study and compare various modes of “asexuality”, including the underexplored sex chromosomal situation in parental bisexual species and hybrid “asexuals”, the alteration of gametogenesis and fertilization in four independently evolved “asexual” complexes of fishes and amphibians. The outcome of the research will deliver insights into the onset of “asexuality” in different vertebrates by hybridization (including the parental sex determination systems) and reveal the underlying processes of partial genome elimination, occurring either after fertilization or during gametogenesis as well as ameiotic and premeiotic genome endoreplication leading to clonality.
The project requires to work with fish male and female gametes. The applicant should be experienced in genomic and proteomic methods, cell line transfection and work with cell cultures in general. The project will involve fertilization, and early embryogenesis with specific goals to determine sperm contribution to early embryogenesis and its activation. The questions to be answer will cover tracing sperm fate after gamete membrane fusion, including evaluation of sperm acrosome integrity, mitochondrial activity, paternal DNA elimination mechanism, existence/absence of protamine to histone exchange and possible paternal histone contribution to early embryogenesis, and others. The methods will also include histology, IF, IHC, WB, IP, co-IP, confocal and super-resolution microscopy, TEM, SEM, gene expression, PCR, qRT-PCR and many others. Further data analysis, preparation for the manuscript and active part in writing publications and presenting the data is required.
- PhD in relevant field of Developmental, Reproductive or Cell Biology
- Knowledge of fish gamete and fertilization incl. early embryonic development
- Proved history of research activities
- Publication activity records
- Ability to actively participate in a research program
- Excellent communication skills and teamwork
- English, written and spoken - fluent
Candidate profile: We are looking for motivated, a bright Postdoctoral associate with background in fish reproductive biology, holding Ph.D. degree in molecular and cell biology, developmental biology or reproductive biology. The scientific focus on fish fertilization and early cleavage, including gamete/embryo evaluation and handling is required. The knowledge should cover genomic and proteomic methods of wide range. The candidate should be able and work with fish gametes and early cleaved embryos. Excellent English is essential. The candidate should be a team-player and willing to work with the other lab members and international collaborators.
What we offer:
- Full time position for three years with a possible extension.
- Excellent scientific background and professional growth.
- Friendly and supporting environment in the state-of-the-art scientific institute.
Starting date: July-August, 2023, if not agreed otherwise.
Workplace location: Institute of Biotechnology, The Czech Academy of Sciences, Centre of Excellence BIOCEV, Vestec, Prague West region, Czech Republic. BIOCEV Centre was completed in the year 2015 and is fully equipped for experimental work in molecular and cellular biology.
Application materials: professional CV including a list of publication and citation metrics, motivation letter, recommendation letter by a mentor or head of the project including their contact details.
Please send the required materials in electronic form to email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
Application deadline: June 30, 2023
