The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Environmental Predictions (EPD) and Impact and Policy Department (IPD) of the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), provide essential insights into key processes of the Earth System. The EPD regional air quality team works with air pollution research and conducts scientific work on local and regional studies of anthropogenic and natural pollutants. The IPD Emissions team, is responsible for numerical methodologies, data analysis and processing tools of anthropogenic emissions from Cyprus and the region, emission reduction scenarios and effectiveness of Air Quality Plans measures, towards accurate and up-to-date reporting of GHG and air pollutants.

The CARE-C Centre of Excellence of the Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly motivated and qualified individuals to join the Environmental Predictions and Impacts and Policy Department as Technical Research Specialists with knowledge on emission inventory monitoring, validating and reporting, air quality modelling as well as data science applications. The successful candidates will provide technical support and expertise to the research objectives of the EPD and IPD, within the framework of national and/or international service and research projects in areas related to:

  • Anthropogenic and natural AP and GHG emissions MRV for reporting purposes
  • Assessment of AQPs for the area of interest
  • Emission inventories, air pollution and research analysis for scientific activities
  • Large data processing, curating and visualizing

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop in an international research environment and work in collaboration with linked academic institutions in the EMME region.

The rank of the position will depend on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 12 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

For Officer rank:

  • Monitoring, verifying, reporting and compiling national total and gridded local emission inventories for air pollutants and GHG and their projections
  • Investigating and carrying out test methodologies for scenario analysis in compliance with and adherence to European and national regulations and directives.
  • Technical Contribution to research activities related to current and projected GHG and air pollutants emissions
  • Supporting in publishing and communicating the research output and implications at different levels, including academic, public and policy related
  • Participating in the training of new research and technical staff
  • For Senior Officer rank:

    All the above and:

  • Technical contribution to research activities related to the use of satellite observations
  • Technical contribution to proposals for attracting external funding to sustain in the medium/long-term the scientific activities relevant to this subject
  • Participating in the educational programs of the Institute
  • Actively pursuing regional and international networking and capacity-building activities, especially in relation to emission inventory development and air quality modelling communities such as CAMS, TFEIP, EU WG, FAIRMODE activities, JRC community etc.

    Specific Requirements

    Required Qualifications

  • Master Degree in Environmental / Atmospheric or Chemical Sciences or Engineering or Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science or related fields
  • Knowledge of data mathematical and/or statistical tools that can be used for Emission Monitoring, reporting and verification and satellite data processing
  • Experience with IPCC/EMEP guidelines for emissions inventory reporting methodologies, and EU/UNFCCC submissions and tools
  • Python or R, with experience in data cleaning, transformation, and/or visualization through educational courses or trainings, and applications
  • Good knowledge of IT tools such as Excel, Access, big data processing and familiarity with Linux environments and HPC systems
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience in communicating and fostering relationships with external stakeholders and under EU projects, as well as participating in technical proposals
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem-solving skill
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience for Officer
  • For Senior Officer:

    All the above and:

  • Understanding of atmospheric and emission processes, familiarity with modelling tools for air pollution applications
  • Background in either experimental or computational atmospheric chemistry research and support
  • Expertise with policies and regulations for air quality and national emissions and knowledge of Best Available Technologies for different emission sectors, particularly national regulations and planning (NAPCP, NECD, NECP)
  • Minimum 4 years relevant experience for Senior Officer

    • Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage
