The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its four Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center (CARE-C). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic feature of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Research Software Engineer to support the EuroHPC National Competence Center (NCC) of Cyprus. The successful candidate will be part of the High Level Support Team (HLST) of the NCC and will be working on the front-end and visualization aspects of projects that involve High-Performance Computing (HPC), “Big Data” management and analytics, and/or large-scale Data Science (DS) and Machine Learning (ML) projects. The goal of these projects will be to enable academic, public and private organizations in Cyprus to develop their HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML skills and to benefit from the growing potential of these technologies.

The candidate will be working primarily with CyI Faculty and Research staff as well as with external organizations in achieving the previous goal.

This position offers a unique opportunity for exciting work focusing on front-end development across a wide range of interesting projects, and interacting with both researchers and users of these projects.

The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and the availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  • Design, develop, troubleshoot, debug, test, maintain and update front-end user interface software
  • Create dashboards to be used for data visualization and reporting
  • Optimize and scale applications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as researchers, product managers, backend engineers, data scientists
  • Follow software engineering methodologies, to write high quality, maintainable, scalable, efficient, modifiable and documented code
  • Demonstrate front-end user interfaces to members of the research team as well as end users
  • Work within a team in a collaborative manner and contribute to project reports and deliverables
  • Be involved in training and user-support events

Skills/Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BSc degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Evidence of independent work (i.e., not a course project), in the form of a MSc or undergraduate project, in a computer science related project.
  • Familiarity with front-end development languages and frameworks
  • Experience integrating with RESTful APIs
  • Knowledge of version control systems
  • Experience in working in an agile, iterative development environment
  • Ability to present technical concepts to non-technical users
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (written and verbal)

Preferred Qualifications (not mandatory)

  • MSc in Computer Science
  • Experience in Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator
  • Knowledge of data visualization libraries and tools
  • Familiarity with UI/UX design principles and tools, such as Sketch, Adobe XD, Figma
  • Experience with or understanding of data analysis concepts and tools, such as SQL, NoSQL databases, and data warehousing, is a plus, as it will help the software engineer collaborate effectively with the data science team.
  • Previous experience in a research/academic institution
  • Previous experience in writing technical reports
  • A strong portfolio of relevant projects and experience
