The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its four Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C). The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Research Assistant or Post‐Doctoral Fellow Position for the Energy Division.

The research work is funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) and concerns a Proof-of‐Concept investigation. The successful candidate will be required to sign a Non‐Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to carry out research activities relevant to thermal energy storage. These activities will take place at the Thermal Energy Storage Lab (TESLAB) of the Energy Group in Nicosia.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, for a nine (9) month fixed‐term period, with the potential of renewal depending on the candidate’s performance and availability of funds. The project relates to the field of Thermal Energy Storage and is concerned with the development of a patented method for amplifying the exergy of thermocline energy storage. In the first month of the project, the successful candidate will engage in the design of the experimental set‐up and relevant components using heat transfer, thermodynamics and Levelized Cost analyses, as well as using the already developed CFD models. In the second and third month of the project, activities will entail the implementation of the experimental set‐up. The successful candidate will be monitoring the manufacturing process and working with the Energy Division control experts to implement the required sensor and data logging routines. The rest of the project time will be dedicated to experimental work, data post processing and report writing.

The rank of the position will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 9 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  • Analytical model development in the fields of thermo‐mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics as well as application of already developed CFD models, followed by material selection analysis.
  • Design, prepare and carry out experiments in heat transfer (e.g. experimental rig design, monitoring the manufacturing of the required parts)
  • Data post processing in MATLAB (or in any other similar platform) to evaluate parameters in the field of heat transfer, thermodynamics and techno‐economics (e.g. thermal power, exergy and levelized cost of exergy).
  • Preparing technical reports.
  • For the post‐doctoral position:

  • Preparing publications and contributing to proposal writing
  • Presenting results to internal and external stakeholders
