The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European Non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Center (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly motivated and qualified individual to join the Institute as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow or Associate Research Scientist, depending level of experience, in our interdisciplinary research team of STeDI-RC. The successful candidate will primarily work in the EU-funded RAINFOREST project ( https://rainforest-horizon.eu/ ) and will be instrumental in analyzing Cyprus' tourism industry's food chain to recommend sustainable practices towards biodiversity conservation. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a high-impact international project and work at the intersection of environmental science, sustainable tourism, and policy development.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting empirical data collection and analyses of Cyprus' touristic food chain, developing sustainable strategies, and engaging with diverse stakeholders to achieve the project's objectives. The role demands a keen understanding of the environmental impact of tourism, particularly in food consumption, and a commitment to developing innovative solutions for behavioral and transformative change in the tourism sector of Cyprus. In the case that an Associate Research Scientist is appointed, the selected candidate will additionally be expected to actively participate and contribute in the development of research proposals aimed at securing additional funding.

The rank of the position will depend on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications. The period of the appointment will be for a duration of two years with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

Depending on the rank and their prior experience, the selected candidate(s) are expected to be involved in most or all of the activities below:

  • Perform empirical studies and data analysis related to sustainable food chains in tourism
  • Assess the environmental impact of Cyprus' touristic food chain
  • Utilize system mapping and transformative change methodologies for sustainable practices
  • Engage with various stakeholders to co-develop and implement sustainable supply networks
  • Develop policy recommendations, contributing to sectoral policy-making processes
  • Contribution to scientific publications.
  • Disseminate findings through project reports, scientific publications, and policy forums
  • Collaborate in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
  • Contribution to project deliverables and participation in project meetings in Cyprus or abroad.
  • Presentations in scientific conferences and participation in outreach events.
  • Contribution to proposal writing.

    Required Qualifications

  • For the position of Postdoctoral Fellow :
  • Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability Sciences, Industrial Ecology, Environmental Policy, Environmental Economics, or related fields
  • Knowledge of environmental impact assessment methods and tools
  • Publication(s) in international academic journals
  • Presentation(s) in international conferences
  • Experience with environmental impact assessment tools
  • Good data analytical and research skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • High level of organizational, analytical, creative and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt in a multicultural environment.
  • For the position of Associate Research Scientist:
  • All the above, and:

  • Research experience in applying environmental impact assessment methods
  • Track record of relevant publications in international academic journals
  • Presentations in international conferences
  • Invited lectures in international conferences/workshops/seminars
  • 3-year experience after completion of PhD required
  • Experience with Integrated Assessment modeling tools and sustainable practices implementation
  • Knowledge of the tourism industry, particularly in the context of Cyprus or similar regions
  • Excellent data analytical and research skills
  • Publications in international academic journals

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in system dynamics modeling and transformative change methodologies
    • Familiarity with environmental footprint calculators or similar assessment tools
    • Specialization in areas such as Life Cycle Assessment is highly desirable
    • Knowledge of Greek language will be considered an advantage
