Offer Description

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), invites applications for the recruitment of qualified applicants for the Computer Vision and Machine Learning Scientist position at the Maritime Digitalisation Centre (MDigiC) of CMMI, situated in Cyprus. The employment period is a fixed-term two-year contract, with the possibility of renewal. Availability to work from our headquarters in Larnaka, with the flexibility for hybrid work.

Company Description:

The CMMI is a non-profit, research, innovation and technology development organisation established in Cyprus, supported by EU funds via the Teaming program, as well as the Government of Cyprus and established industry stakeholders. The CMMI pulls together expertise from local universities and industry and international partners.

Maritime Digitalisation Centre

Central to this position is an unfolding interdisciplinary research direction within MDigiC with an overarching goal of bridging gaps and forging new paths in earth observation and remote sensing for marine and maritime applications using both traditional and emerging machine learning methodologies. Imagery data is predominantly used, sourced from various sensors, e.g. optical, radar, hyperspectral, and with varying spatial and temporal characteristics. Alongside images, other types of data, such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS), are sometimes integrated to improve our insights.

Current projects include advancing satellite remote sensing capabilities to localise vessels (large-scale small object classification), extracting relevant imagery from petabytes of data (content-based image retrieval and self-supervision), and enhancing spatial resolution (super-resolution) as a means of improving downstream applications. Other multidisciplinary Computer Vision initiatives include marine robotics, with projects centred around autonomous navigation, and marine biodiversity efforts, such as the nuanced in-situ plate analysis of Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) for the detection of marine non-indigenous species.

Candidate profile:

We are in search of a scientist with the desire and ability to undertake a range of multidisciplinary projects that will support research work at the CMMI. As CMMI is in its formative stage, candidates have the unique opportunity to influence the institute’s direction and to capitalise on partnerships with local and international CMMI partners.

Job responsibilities:

Successful candidates will:

Research & Development:

  • Conduct research within funded projects by implementing and evaluating state-of-the-art methodologies.
  • Propose ideas for novel research themes and hypotheses with the potential of translating them into publications and securing funding.
  • Test hypotheses and evaluate scientific data from various sources, revisiting and adjusting working hypotheses as suitable.
  • Collaborate on projects with partners from other research institutions, universities, and the industry.

Publication & Dissemination:

  • Author research articles for peer-reviewed journals and conferences, as well as book chapters.
  • Present papers at international conferences, and other venues to disseminate research findings.
  • Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports, including those for project deliverables.

Management & Coordination:

  • Manage personal academic research and associated administrative tasks.
  • Liaise with funding bodies and provide information to project stakeholders.
  • Represent MDigiC at both internal and external meetings and seminars, either with other members of the team or alone.
