The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Climate Change Engineer in the Energy Department of the EEWRC. The successful candidate will work as part of the team for the Lemesos City Cooling Challenge (LC3 ) Project , and will be expected to:

  • Design, develop and deliver innovative climate-related workshops (WP1)
  • Develop and apply resulting innovation solutions from the Lemesos Commons approach.
  • Develop and apply new methods for Monitoring, Evaluating and Learning from Lc3 for the Climate Neutrality Mission of Lemesos.
  • Contribute to the Lemesos Municipality capacity building for Net Zero Emissions.
  • Contribute to the monitoring of the Lemesos City Carbon footprint.
  • Assist with the Lc3 project management

The rank of the position will depend on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications. The initial period of the appointment will be for a fixed-term period until the end of the project (currently 31/05/2025). An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  • Design and development of methods and programs for participatory co-design solution Workshops and the Lemesos Commons.
  • Contribute to the deliverables writing and compiling as a member of the LC3 project coordination team. Assist in the management of the project.
  • Selection, design and monitoring of on-the-ground interventions.
  • Carbon footprint monitoring at the scale of Lemesos city.

    Specific Requirements

    Required Qualifications

  • Master degree in Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Architecture, Engineering or any other related field
  • Digital resources design and implementation
  • Studies, Research or Innovation in (some technical aspect of) Environmental Science/Engineering (preferably Climate Change)
  • Experience in development and utilization of digital systems for climate-related data, observation, and modelling (such as: emissions modelling, GIS, carbon footprint calculations, financial climate modelling, statistical systems)
  • Greek (excellent for oral and written communication) and English (very good for oral and written communication).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adapt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary research environment
  • High level of organizational, analytical, creative and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities with limited supervision
  • Proven relevant experience (through studies, voluntary or work experience)
  •  

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in teaching, seminar giving, workshop training (preferably in Greek)
    • Work or studies in policy (preferably environment/climate-related)
    • Dissemination (such as web-site design)
    • Diverse work experience: public and private, in Cyprus and/or elsewhere
    • Participation in R&I projects including Project management related experience, (preferably EU-funded, on environment/climate)
    • Experience in development of educational material: any subject, preferably on some aspect of environment/climate.
