The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European Non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its four Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a new faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor with specialization in Applied Environmental Economics. The new faculty member is expected to advance the environmental economics research, innovation and teaching agenda of The Cyprus Institute, and in particular that of the Water Division of the Energy Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC). The principal focus of the envisioned research and innovation agenda is the development of interdisciplinary, theoretical and empirical approaches for analysing the inter-linkages between the economy and the environment.

The faculty member will investigate the economic and environmental impacts of climate change adaptation strategies in the land and water use sectors and decarbonisation transition pathways. The economic modelling of climate adaptation and environmental policies is an integral part of the Water Division’s portfolio for guiding decision-making at national and regional level in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region. In addition, the new faculty member is expected to collaborate with the Graduate School developing new courses/curriculum in the field of Environmental Economy, teaching and mentoring MSc and PhD students.

The new faculty member will be on a tenure-track appointment. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

The selected faculty member will be responsible for helping to shape and advance The Cyprus Institute’s research, innovation and teaching agenda by:

  • Developing and implementing strategies and methods appropriate to the Institute’s mission to support the resilience and the recovery of the economy of Cyprus and its transformation to a knowledge-based, resource efficient and competitive economy through:
    • the development of environmentally-extended economic models to analyse the macroeconomic implications of resource use including water, energy and emissions from key socioeconomic activities across different spatial scales, i.e., from local to national and regional;
    • the economic valuation of the costs, benefits and the trade-offs of water, energy and environmental policies in Cyprus and the EMME region, including the monetization of nonmarket goods and services, using stated and revealed preference approaches;
  • Developing and implementing state-of-the-art spatial econometric models and approaches appropriate to the Institute’s mission to become a regional research hub in the field of sustainable natural resource use, water energy food ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus, and sustainable finance;
  • Strengthening the research community of the Institute by participating and leading world-class research programs in environmental and spatial economics and policies, using state-of-the-art analytical and modelling tools;
  • Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  • Mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students in the Institute’s doctoral program, particularly in the Environment and Atmospheric Sciences program;
  • Communicating the results and implications of the research at all levels, including the academic community, decision makers and the public at large.
