Department Overview

The Department of Urban Planning and Design sets out to offer a globally competitive, professional planning and urban design programme unique in its focus on both local Chinese and international planning and urban design policy and practice. Research areas include urbanisation and urban regeneration in China, heritage and landscape conservation, local identity, migration and regional restructuring, smart cities, and participatory systems of planning. 

Responsibilities and Duties

The Department seeks to appoint a Senior Associate Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, or Teaching Lecturer in Urban Planning and Design Planning to join our academic staff. The successful applicants will bring together interdisciplinary expertise in urban planning and design to advance future programmes and collaborations within Design School, and maintain an active pedagogic profile in the field of urban planning and design.

All academic staff within the Department are required to teach, and should be willing and able to undertake teaching at all levels, including undergraduate, masters, and PhD. The workload of academic staff in the Department is generally shared between teaching, research, and service. Senior positions are expected to greatly contribute to the research activity of the Department. Research activities include the publication of research articles, the development of external research collaboration, and applications for research funding. Teaching Lecturers contribute to the learning and teaching activity of the Department, followed by service, then research.

In the present round of recruitment, all fields of urban planning and design will be given full consideration. However, applicants in the following fields are especially welcome:

  • Urban design studios at all levels
  • Planning in the UK
  • Spatial planning project
  • Introduction to urban planning and design 

Personal Attributes

Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Applicants are expected to have good language skills in English, and be able to teach in English, the language of instruction at the university. The successful appointee will be expected to teach; to undertake research in their area of specialisation on both individual and group projects, and to be actively engaged in the publication of the results; and to participate in the administration and development of the Department of Urban Planning and Design. 

Essential Qualifications/Experiences

Successful applicants to the position of Senior Associate Professors are expected to:

  • Hold a PhD degree in a field related to urban planning and design.
  • Have an excellent record of academic publications in internationally-recognised journals
  • Have successfully obtained and managed grants and funding (external to the home institution).
  • Have experience supervising PhD students to completion
  • Have relevant experience in curriculum development
  • Have relevant experience in management and university administration 

Successful applicants to the position of Associate Professor are expected to:

  • Hold a PhD degree in a field related to urban planning and design.
  • Have a strong record of academic publications in internationally-recognised journals
  • Have successfully obtained and managed grants and funding (external to the home institution).
  • Have experience supervising PhD students to completion
  • Have relevant experience in curriculum development 

Successful applicants to the position of Assistant Professor are expected to:

  • Hold a PhD degree in a field related to urban planning and design.
  • Have a record of academic publications in internationally-recognised journals
  • Have successfully obtained and managed grants and funding 

Successful applicants to the position of Teaching Lecturer are expected to:

  • Hold a Masters degree ideally with two years teaching experience in higher education.
  • Have had substantial continued engagement in professional practice in a field related to urban planning and design.
  • Hold a certificate in profession studies in learning and teaching in higher education, or equivalent.
  • Have had experience delivering effective teaching in a high standard. 

Desirable Qualifications/Experience

Successful applicants should preferably have experience with:

  • International and Chinese urban planning and design practice
  • Contributing to the development of an academic unit through significant service roles
  • Managing academic programmes
  • Experience teaching international classrooms
  • Recognized professional qualification and accreditation (such as MRTPI)  

Compensation Package

Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s educational, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances. 

Citizenship and Visa Regulations

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. Please be advised candidates over 65 may be not eligible for PRC work visa.
