The School of International Education, BIT, has delivered a four-year undergraduate program in International Economics with Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, Utah State University (USU) since 2003 hitherto. The program runs on Fangshan campus, BIT in Beijing with staff from both BIT and USU. Graduates from this program will receive a Bachelor of Science degree from USU in economics with an emphasis in International Economics and Trade. 

Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at USU offers a pathway for international students to develop their linguistic and academic skills and intercultural competence. Students in this program need to finish IELI courses before going into the major of economics. We are seeking to appoint a English language teacher to join our academic team in Beijing. The post holder’s main duties will be to teach English language to students during their first and second year in this program. 

Main Responsibilities:

The post delivers English for academic purposes and academic study skills development in support of the students enrolled in the joint program between BIT and USU.  Working as part of a close-knit team, the English language teacher has four main areas of responsibility:

  • To plan and organise effective learning activities for the language level of the student cohort, in appropriate balance with the intended learning outcomes of the program;
  • To develop and motivate students to engage in learning, and help them to improve the quality of their work;
  • To provide students with useful test-taking strategies, suitable for the assessment types used within and at the end of the programme;
  • To work effectively and cooperatively with colleagues, including the lead faculty member at USU. 

Qualifications:

IELI Policy on Teacher Credentials and Experience

The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) has specific requirements for faculty teaching credit classes in its China programs.

  • IELI requires that faculty teaching its credit classes have at least a master’s degree in TESOL or applied linguistics.
  • Exceptions may be made when the degree is in a closely related field such as linguistics, second language education, or foreign language teaching. In those cases, however, the teacher must have a knowledge base shown in the academic transcript that at a minimum includes the following:
    • Language teaching methodology
    • The nature of language (e.g. introduction to linguistics)
    • The structure of English (e.g. syntax, phonology, morphology, discourse)
    • Second language acquisition
    • Intercultural communication
    • Practicum experience
  • Ideally, essential 2 years’ experience of teaching and assessing English language at undergraduate level; This policy applies to IELI credit courses (1220, 1260, 2310, 2320, 2360, 2410, 2420, 2460).
  • Advanced level of proficiency and communicative competence in English;
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • A willingness to work flexibly as required. 

Desirable:

  • Experience of teaching and assessment of undergraduate students in a Chinese university environment;
  • Previous experience of teaching English for academic purposes and TOEFL or IELTS.
