Postdoctoral fellowships in Active Galactic Nuclei and Galaxy Evolution

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 16 Apr 2023

The Institute for Astrophysical Studies at Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) invites applications for two postdoctoral research fellowships in AGN/Galaxy evolution.

The postdoctoral fellows will use state-of-the-art ALMA and optical IFU maps of the Lyman-alpha emission in the study of either (1) The environment of the IR luminous Hot Dust Obscured Galaxy W2246 at z~4.6, and (2) The link between the ISM and CGM in massive star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 from the ALMA CRISTAL large program. The postdocs will join an active scientific environment, working with Profs. Roberto Assef and Manuel Aravena, respectively, and Dr. Jorge Gonzalez-Lopez within our AGATHA group at UDP.

The position is for 2 years, with extension opportunities from ANID Fondecyt and CATA funds. The expected beginning of these fellowships is October 2023, with some flexibility.

While at UDP, successful candidates will qualify as members of the Chilean community and will be eligible for 10% privileged access to all telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, Gemini South, VLT, Magellan, CTIO, etc, as well as to future facilities such as ELT, LSST and GMT.

Our team is currently leading and is involved in numerous projects, including the WISE Hot DOGs collaboration, ALMA Spectroscopic Survey of the HUDF (ASPECS ), The ALMA CRISTAL LP , and the South Pole Telescope Submillimeter Galaxy (SPT-SMG) collaboration.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail in pdf format to Prof. Manuel Aravena ([email protected] ) by April 16, 2023 to ensure full consideration. They should include a brief cover letter (1-page) manifesting the postdoctoral position they are applying to (either or both), a research statement (max. 3 pages; including current and previous research, and a research plan while working at UDP), and a CV (with publication list). In addition, applicants should also be able to provide the names and contact information of 3 references willing to provide letters of recommendation on request. We encourage applicants to get in contact with Profs. M. Aravena ([email protected] ) and R. Assef ([email protected] ). We encourage applications from women and minority groups.
