Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre, University of Toronto Mississauga– Writing Instructor  

Nature of the assignment: The Writing Instructors at the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre counsel students individually and in small groups on university writing, especially on organization, reasoning, style, and language use. 

Assignment description: Instructors will see students with writing assignments from a variety of disciplines. Instructors may also be asked to deliver group instruction on general writing skills or develop writing resources.  

Estimated number of positions available: 6-9 


Hours of Work (per position): 20 to 80 hours/semester – subject to change 

Schedule Information: In-person hours from Monday to Friday from 9am –5pm. A limited number of online synchronous and asynchronous hours may be available. In-person appointments will be held on the UTM Campus. Synchronous and asynchronous appointments will be conducted online using the WCONLINE platform.  Paid training on synchronous and/or asynchronous writing instruction is mandatory for all Writing Instructors who have not received training in the past four months and will be held in the first two weeks of September. 

Sessional Dates of Appointment: 1 September 2024– 30 April 2024 (Fall/Winter semesters) 

Salary

$53.41/hour  (Writing Instructor 1)
$57.42/hour  (Writing Instructor 2)
$59.11/hour  (Writing Instructor 2 – Priority) 


All positions are subject to budgetary approval. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A PhD in a appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education) with strong writing and oral communication skills.  

  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching communication. 

  • Relevant experience teaching writing one-on-one or teaching university courses with a writing component.  

  • Previous experience in a writing centre.  

  • Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions.  

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Ability to work in person on the UTM campus 

  • Experience in STEM communication  

  • Second-language instruction at the university level  

Description of duties: Instructors will meet with students, in-person, online synchronized/asynchronized or during in-person drop-in sessions to support students with writing assignments for a variety of disciplines (e.g., Forensic Science, Computer Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Biology, Management).
