The incumbent reports directly to the Manager of the Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS). S/he participates in the care of the various animal holding facilities located within Carleton University, assuring they are in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food requirements and the Canadian Council of Animal Care Standards (CCAC). Assists with overseeing the researchers and students use correct procedures including anesthetic and surgical techniques. S/he is required to assist with; administrative duties, dispensing of controlled drugs, placing animal orders, development and implementation of standard operating procedures. S/he is to ensure the health of all-animal species and the care and maintenance of the facilities and its equipment related to animal care. Participates in all aspects of the animal husbandry program required for the good health and well-being of all animal species used for research and teaching at Carleton University. Assists in the instruction of an animal care course to be given routinely to researchers and students. In the absence of the Animal Services Coordinator (ACS), she may be asked to organize the daily work load for the ACVS team. S/he adheres to and promulgates the guidelines with respect to humane and ethical treatment of animals as specified by the CCAC and the Animals for Research Act of the province of Ontario.

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Fully cognizant of the CCAC guidelines and of current federal, provincial and local laws and regulations.
• Good knowledge in the theory, (biology, animal health, anatomy, physiology, genetics, and pathology) practice of laboratory science, laboratory animal care, proficiency in surgical skills and assisting.
• Good knowledge in the safe work practices in the laboratory.
• Experience in collaborating with people in a university, college or research environment is essential.
• Knowledge of computer programs for maintaining computerized records is essential.
• Please note that the incumbent is listed as a contact in for facility emergencies including the Building Alarm System.

The above is normally acquired through:
• The completion of a Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Assistant Program from an accredited Community College.
• Five years of directly related work experience, preferably in a research setting.
• RLAT (Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist) certification or equivalent ARLAT (Associate Registered Laboratory Animal Technician) is a requirement of this position.

This position is required to work on campus. Exceptionally, since March 2020, many staff and faculty at Carleton University have been working from home in order to comply with public health requirements while continuing to provide services to support the operational functioning of the university. We are currently in the process of identifying positions that need to work on campus as part of our return to campus process. This position may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements or it may have been identified as one of the roles that are required to work on campus. If this position is required to work on campus, the successful candidate will be informed of the health and safety measures that are in place to ensure their safety on campus. If there is a requirement to work remotely (it is possible that there could be a requirement to work both remotely and on campus), the successful candidate will work with the manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. Please note that once public health requirements permit, Carleton University will resume normal on campus operations and at that point there will be a timely notification provided by the manager and the requirement to working full time physically onsite will resume. Therefore, we are looking for candidates currently in or looking to relocate to the Ottawa area.
