Job Summary
Reporting to a Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for performing various preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and assisting trades staff in their daily work requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Accompanies and assists trades staff, project leaders, consultants and contractors as required
• Maintains and repairs non-electrical components of light fixtures (bulbs, shades, etc.)
• Properly disposes of used lamps and maintains adequate stock levels, including ballasts
• Conducts field audits to gather applicable information pertaining the creation and modification of PM routines
• Performs PM inspections on interior/exterior lights, exit lights, washrooms, doors and battery operated smoke detectors
• Follows up on deficiencies identified during PM inspections and refers certified trades work to Maintenance Supervisor, applicable trades person and/or client reception for action
• Cleans pits and drainage areas as required
• Cleans and inspects roofs, including drains and gutters
• Cleans and maintains mechanical rooms
• Removes graffiti utilizing appropriate products and techniques
• Plunges toilets
• Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as University and government rules and regulations
• Maintains a clean work environment
• Performs other duties as required
Note
A USP will not perform certified trades work
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. 
Required Qualifications
• High school graduation and 3 – 5 years building and maintenance experience required
• Completion of Building Service Technician course preferable
• Electrical and/or mechanical aptitude preferable
• Ability to read, interpret and prioritize work orders, required
• Proficiency in the use of the tools of the trade (eg. Fluorescent bulb pulverizer, pressure washer, etc.)
• Ability to work comfortably at heights (including personal lifts) and in confined spaces
• General safety, fall protection, confined space, lift operation and WHMIS training an asset
• Good communication and organizational skills required
• Reliable and punctual
• Ability to take direction
• Must be willing and able to work overtime as required
• Familiar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as University and government rules and regulations
• Computer skills an asset
