About Us:

The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is fourth among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard, Yale and Columbia. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 300 graduate programs, over 70 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The UTL data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

About the Earth Sciences and Mathematical Sciences Libraries

The Earth Sciences Library (Noranda) is the main library at the University of Toronto (U of T) for botany, forestry, geology, and ecological evolutionary biology. With over 110,000 volumes, materials consist of books, periodicals, theses, and government and technical reports. The Mathematical Sciences Library collection is focused on mathematics and statistics and contains over 40,000 volumes of monographs, serials, and theses.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Interim Head, Earth & Mathematical Science Libraries, the User Services Generalist is responsible for providing direct service to patrons and performs a range of duties: loan services, retrieval services, providing information and referrals, and shelving books. Service may be provided in person and via telephone or online. Circulation duties may involve opening the library, and staffing the library on weekends and/or evenings. May be responsible for other duties such as collection maintenance, stack maintenance, serials check-in and record maintenance, materials processing, performing searches, and binding. The User Services Generalist also has responsibility for provision of resource sharing services. The User Services Generalist uses a comprehensive knowledge of library policies and procedures, as well as the ability to interpret policies and procedures and resolve problems. Required to perform complex bibliographic searching and verification tasks; handles follow up for ILL requests and resolution of related problems. Provides assistance and training or information to other employees regarding ILL procedures. The position may also provide workflow leadership; training and be responsible for the establishment of schedules for students and the preliminary documentation in the payroll process. Provides back-up for other staff and performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications (Minimum)

Education:

• Community College Graduation required (Library Technician program) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Experience: 

• A minimum of one (1) year of related experience required; experience in an academic, scientific or technical library preferred
• Working knowledge of integrated library systems software required;
• Working knowledge of ILL management software desired
• Working knowledge of U of T library system and policies required
• Working knowledge of resource sharing procedures in the central and campus libraries desired
• Working knowledge of bibliographic searching and verification skills required

Other Skills:

• Windows software applications, web browsers, and basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and e-mail software required.

Notes:

• This position is 100% on-site at the Math Library and Earth Sciences Library and is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
• This position is a 1 year term position.
