Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of Access Services and under the general direction of the Access Services Librarian, the incumbent is responsible for providing library services to the Carleton community, which includes external partners, and outside borrowers, on a scheduled basis at the service desks, in the library and in the virtual environment during daytime, evening or weekend hours. User Services staff are primarily responsible for the operation of fulfillment and resource requests from the Carleton collection and other libraries in the OCUL consortium, provide efficient operation of the “Scan on Demand” service, maintenance of the physical collection as well as library building and facilities. The incumbent acts as a back-up for other user services team members during busy periods and absences. Performs other related duties as required.

Please note working hours for this position are: Tuesday - Thursday: 8:30am -4:30pm and Friday & Saturday: 2:00 - 10:00pm


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Excellent public service skills to be able to communicate well and to deal efficiently and effectively with people, including those angry and frustrated, in a diplomatic, tactful and persuasive manner.
• Strong commitment to service.
• Thorough knowledge of Library regulations, procedures, and services, as well as general knowledge of University structure.
• Good knowledge of office productivity software applications and processes is required for the writing, communication and record maintenance aspects of the position.
• Ability to conduct investigative work, pay strict attention to detail and maintain careful records.
• Ability to work as a team member, to manage time efficiently, organize work effectively, to communicate well and to deal tactfully, efficiently and effectively with people.
• Ability to cope with high volume workload and meet deadlines with accuracy and efficiency.
• Required to meet the physical demands of this position, which includes a mix of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and lifting/pushing circulated library materials.
• Comfortable with ensuring adherence to rules, regulations and policies.
• Requires a good working knowledge of the library services platform/discovery layer tool and a thorough understanding of the Library of Congress call number format and the CODOC catalogue system.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Two year Library and Information Technician Diploma from a recognized college.
• University degree considered an asset.
• Three years of relevant library experience with cataloguing techniques, use of spreadsheets and databases, customer service, and in supervising part time staff.

This position is regularly required to work on campus. Due to the ongoing dynamic nature of Covid-19, you may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements. If this happens, you will work with your direct manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. You are required to follow all directives to set up a safe and confidential workspace in a remote location and ensure all Carleton property (intellectual and other) is safeguarded. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
