Position Details
The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is seeking University of Lethbridge students for Prentice Institute and City Scholars internship programs. The successful candidates will work full time, paid positions commencing May 1, 2024 with the contract ending September 1, 2024.
Both the Prentice Institute and City Scholars internship programs are designed to provide students hands-on experience in conducting and supporting elements throughout the research process. Prentice Institute interns will be particularly focused on supporting and collaborating with Institute researchers. City Scholars interns will work on a mixture of projects related to the work of the Prentice Institute and those in support of the City of Lethbridge’s City Scholars program.
The City Scholars interns will also have the opportunity to participate in a special Policy Innovation Lab (PIL) initiative during the first month of the internship. The PIL is structured as an immersive “policy bootcamp” where students synthesize information and perspectives, conduct academic and gray literature research, and co-author a technical background report for the City of Lethbridge. The 2024 PIL is focused on Food Security, and the co-exploration of land use policy options for the City to tackle experiences of systemic food insecurity in the community.
Up to a maximum of three Prentice Institute interns will be hired.
Up to a maximum of three City Scholars interns will be hired.
Responsibilities:
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews of academic and grey literatures
  • Providing copy editing support for manuscripts, working papers, and policy briefs
  • Collecting and producing supporting documentation for grant proposals
  • Providing research assistance as needed (may include coding, data management, analyses, visualization and reporting)
  • Assisting in the research and knowledge mobilization activities of the Institute more generally (may include events, arranging and supporting guest speakers, and community-based outreach)
  • Ability to work independently, solid communication skills both verbal and written

Positions are located on the U of L campus in the Prentice Institute office (it is anticipated that students participating in the PIL will be working from the University’s Foster James Penny Building located in Downtown Lethbridge, for the duration of the Lab)
NOTE: At this time, the University of Lethbridge can only employ students with an active Canadian bank account. This position is only open to University of Lethbridge students.

Position Qualifications
  • Enrolled at the University of Lethbridge as an undergraduate
  • GPA 3.2 or higher
  • Applicants are welcome from any program of study, but a preference will be given to students working in areas immediately relevant to the mandate of the Institute and/or the City Scholars Policy Innovation Lab (PIL)
  • For interns chosen to participate in the PIL, preference will be given to students who 1) have previously participated in the City Scholars Program, 2) have engaged with questions of food security through academic, volunteer, or other work, and/or 3) identify as a member of an Proficiency in Statistical analysis software (SPSS, Stata) is an asset but not required
