Project: Mega Pipelines, Mega Resistance  (under contract with UBC Press) identifies the causal influence of social movement campaigns, what I call “campaign coalitions,” against new mega oil sands pipelines. I argue that since around 2010, campaign coalitions have frustrated the oil industry’s mega pipeline development in North America. I show how broad-based and diverse coalitions of actors formed and used an effective combination of strategies that leveraged increasingly amenable legal, political, and commercial contexts while also influencing and hastening those changes. These campaigns have disrupted the supply of fossil fuels – reducing the economic power of the oil industry (and its government allies) – while also creating socio-political space for alternative energy futures. This research draws on 60 interviews – with oil industry executives, senior government officials, NGO representatives, and lawyers – as well as thousands of regulatory, legal, internal, and public documents.
