Faculty/Unit: School of Continuing Studies, McGill Writing Centre

The McGill University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) invites applications for the position of full-time Thesis Writing Coordinator at the McGill Writing Centre. The McGill Writing Centre is an academic unit that serves the student population through undergraduate and graduate courses as well as non-credit courses and workshops and a tutorial service.

Since its inception in 2011, the McGill Writing Centre (MWC) has expanded its credit and non-credit courses in academic and professional writing, and the unit has grown to include Graphos, a scholarly communication program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and a one-to-one tutorial service. As McGill’s central resource for academic, scholarly, and professional communication, the MWC is seeking a highly qualified individual who is committed to supporting our plans for strategic growth and innovation.

Position Description
We are seeking a Thesis Writing Coordinator to work with the MWC Director and the Graphos team as the academic lead responsible for managing the development, coordination, delivery, facilitator training, and evaluation of our thesis writing support for graduate students.

We are interested in receiving applications from candidates who have successfully completed a graduate thesis (PhD preferred), possess meaningful training or experience in writing pedagogy, have taught or tutored graduate students on their academic writing, have significant administrative or program coordination experience (e.g., developing workshops, coordinating tutors or writing facilitators, conducting outreach with students, faculty, and staff), and have training or experience in program tracking and evaluation.

This is an Academic Associate position, which is a full-time, unranked academic, non-tenure-track position with an initial appointment of one year and renewable for a second year (pending availability of funds and satisfactory performance review after the first year), reporting directly to the MWC Director. The desired start date is January 3, 2022.

Job Duties

Under the direct supervision of the MWC Director, successful applicants will apply their academic training, teaching, and skills to manage the development, coordination, delivery, facilitator training, and evaluation of thesis writing support for graduate students. Successful applicants will also assume key administrative and leadership roles in the unit.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop a thesis writing support program that fosters a culture of writing that is inclusive and supportive and is informed by writing studies research and best practices.

  • Establish multiple writing accountability groups for graduate thesis writers across the disciplines over the course of the year. The groups may consist of structured writing time, mini-workshops, group debriefs, and individual consults as appropriate.

  • Provide leadership and ongoing pedagogical support to writing group facilitators to ensure a high-quality learning experience for students.

  • Prepare regular updates and periodic reports about student progress, facilitator training, and program targets.

  • Work in a collegial and collaborative manner with MWC staff to schedule programming and coordinate other administrative processes.

  • Serve on the MWC’s departmental committee, and as needed, other Faculty or University committees and workgroups.

  • Develop and maintain fruitful working relationships with other Faculties and Schools and with key University service units.

  • Contribute to the development of other offerings or special projects, e.g., courses, workshops, retreats, as needed.

  • Participate in MWC, Faculty, and University orientation and promotional events.
