Departmental Executive Summary

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is a highly-ranked, internationally-competitive department with a strong research profile. We are a diverse unit with programs in human geography, geology, urban planning (within the School of Urban and Regional Planning), environmental earth sciences, environmental studies, and paleontology. Internationally, the earth science program is ranked 35th in the world, according to Nature, and ranked 43rd in the world by Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). In the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact rankings, the University of Alberta was ranked 11th in the world in contributing to Sustainable Cities and Regions, thanks in part to researchers in Human Geography and Planning in EAS. Our research vision is to fund and publish high quality research in top-tier, international venues across the research themes that span our seven degree programs.

Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is interested in attracting candidates in all areas of academic focus related to Urban, Regional and/or Environmental Planning.

The position will be tenure-track and while we intend to hire at the Assistant Professor rank, we will consider appointment at the rank of Associate Professor in the case of a suitably experienced candidate.

A PhD or equivalent doctorate degree is required. The successful candidate will have:

  • productive postdoctoral training or other postgraduate work experience;
  • completed publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals and presented research findings in other venues including conferences, books, or book chapters;
  • demonstrated evidence of strong teaching skills;
  • a record of outreach broadly related to their research, teaching, and/or equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization; and
  • the ability to work and communicate effectively across disciplines and with external communities.
