This posting is for one unionized contractual appointment. A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student employed to assist the Course Supervisor as a Teaching Assistant in a classroom environment. Teaching Assistant Positions are governed by the Collective Agreement between McGill University and the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM)

EDEM 609 Critical Perspectives in Educational Theory & Research

Estimated Number of Positions: 2
Total Hours of Work per Term: 90 hours per (estimated)
Position Summary:

The Teaching Assistant will assist with the preparation of the course material, leading discussions, supervising individual projects, office hours, answering inquiries, providing feedback on the presentations. The TA will also support in class sessions and assess students' work related to course objectives.


Qualifications:

1. Graduate student (PhD student preferred) with a good understanding of at least two of the following areas:

  • Marxist class and social reproduction theories in education

  • Modernism

  • Postmodernism

  • Critical Theory

  • Post-structuralism

  • Gee's theories of Identity

  • Neoliberalism (in education)

  • Activist learning and at least one of the following:

  • Black radical thought, racial capitalism, Afro-pessimism

  • Indigenous anti-colonial theories, pedagogies and/or methodologies

  • Post-colonialism/Orientalism

(good understanding would be demonstrated by the fact that the student uses the theoretical approach in their own graduate work, and/or that their work contains a critique of the approach, and/or that they have explored the area in a lit review or as part of course work, etc)

2. Availability during the official time of the course meetings Fall 2023, Thursdays 5:30 - 8:30PM

3. DISE students will be given priority
