This posting is for one unionized contractual appointment. A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student employed to assist the Course Supervisor as a Teaching Assistant in a classroom environment. Teaching Assistant Positions are governed by the Collective Agreement between McGill University and the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM)

Position Summary:

The Teaching Assistant will assist with the preparation of the course material, leading discussions, supervising individual projects, office hours, answering inquiries, providing feedback on the presentations. The TA will also support in class sessions and assess students' work related to course objectives.

Position responsibilities:

a) help facilitate rehearsals of teaching in all four sections;

b) help prepare materials throughout the semester;

c) help grade the final exam and quizzes.

REHEARSALS: In rehearsals, the preservice teachers practice teaching a lesson. In their role as facilitators, the TAs would provide feedback and facilitate discussions.

MATERIALS: The course can require multiple hours of prep per week to ensure materials are ready. The TAs would also help to check out recording equipment for rehearsals, upload videos, and send links to the students. The bilingual TA would dedicate some of these hours to translating documents to French for the PIF section.

GRADING: Both TAs would help with grading the final exam and quizzes, as instructors will be grading other assignments around the same time.


Qualifications:

  • Must be bilingual (French and English).  

  • Both TAs should have an educational background in mathematics or other STEM fields, mathematics education or other STEM education fields, or elementary school (K-6) education.  

Assets:

  • Formal or non-formal experience with teaching mathematics at the K-12 levels is an asset. Those who do not have teaching experience in mathematics should have experience and knowledge of mathematics education research or another related field.

  • Experience in teaching, supporting, or coaching mathematics K-12 teachers is an asset. 

  • Understanding and experience with practice-based pedagogies of teacher education is an asset.  

  • Having completed the course Seminar in Practice-based Teacher Education is an asset.
