Your opportunity:

MedIT provides information technology support for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Our mission is to partner and collaborate with clients, the University, and third parties to determine value based, sustainable technology solutions that enable the Faculty to achieve its academic mission.

The Systems Specialist will work within the Technical Operations and Infrastructure team to plan, design, and support systems and services across Temerty Medicine. MedIT is undergoing a substantial technology transformation and you’ll be an integral part of the team building a complicated and complex IT environment consisting of dozens of Windows and Linux/Unix-based systems, including high performance research systems support. You will have the opportunity to contribute to greenfield projects such as MedIT's hybrid cloud infrastructure transformation initiative. The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge and demonstrated experience planning, designing, customizing, implementing, and supporting Windows and Unix/Linux systems and other technical domains like scripting, networking, virtualization, storage and security.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, designing, implementing, and supporting maintaining both physical and virtualized systems on a variety of platforms including Unix/Linux, Windows, and Apple OS/X
  • Configuring, administering, maintaining, troubleshooting and resolving issues on a variety of platforms
  • Planning and implementing IT projects for administration and faculty activities, including assessing and determining the feasibility of IT requests and requirements
  • Recommending solutions for the daily support, administration, and maintenance of critical applications, ensuring security measures are adhered to
  • Contributing to the development and update of the architectural framework for highly complex IT systems, including developing and implementing contingency plans for network related software/hardware failure
  • Developing and editing standard operating procedures for IT services including technical documentation and user support guides
  • Planning, recommending, and designing network solutions to meet client needs including executing security measures and troubleshooting network performance issues
  • Lead project initiatives including planning components of IT projects, developing project schedules, risk assessments, and other relevant tasks

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of experience planning, designing, and implementing Windows, Unix/Linux-based systems, and Apple OS/X, ideally in a University or related environment
  • Minimum five years of experience planning, designing, and implementing various technical solutions including virtualization, networking, servers, databases, software, and other relevant technologies
  • Demonstrated experience planning, designing, and implementing various technical solutions including virtualization, networking, servers, databases, software, and other relevant technologies
  • Expert knowledge of Windows, Unix/Linux, and Apple OS/X technologies at a systems level
  • Expert knowledge of networks, networking equipment, VLANs, VPNs and VoIP in order to assist with planning, designing, and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience with computing equipment and software including Unix/Linux and OS/X (workstations, servers), Windows (workstations, servers, terminal services), productivity software, multimedia software, desktop/systems management software, Internet services (i.e., email), and networking and security
  • Experience with all aspects of operating system administration, for example, configuration of a web server, system installation and configuration, printer systems, fundamentals of security and installing third-party software
  • Experience providing project leadership; collaborating on IT purchase recommendations and independently costing IT projects
  • Experience with a variety of high-level programming languages (PHP, Java, Perl, Shell scripts, C variants)
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written) to communicate effectively with both highly-technical and non-technical users
  • Strong interpersonal to effectively work with a wide range of faculty, staff, and students
  • Excellent and documented analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work well as a team member in multi-professional environment and as an individual contributor
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision and to act on one’s own initiative

USW Pay Band 14 -- $88,290 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $112,911. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
