The MacPhail School of Energy is the only energy school in Canada, and we are charting a new course with a focus on sustainable energy sources and practices. MacPhail School of Energy provides hands-on, industry-guided training in labs that mimic job site environments, giving students the skills needed to find a rewarding career in the energy sector.
The Opportunity
The Summer Student position at the MacPhail School of Energy in Sustainability Science is a multifaceted role that involves assisting with laboratory equipment through classification, cleanup, and cataloging, as well as supporting the Sustainability Pod's various activities including booth development for events, expos, and exhibits. Additionally, the role extends to assisting with field work and data collection, essential for sustainability studies and research.
This position not only demands an excellent command of written English for effective communication but also offers a unique blend of technical, educational, and practical experiences, making it an ideal opportunity for students passionate about sustainability and environmental science to apply their knowledge and contribute to meaningful sustainability initiatives.
The Role
    • Laboratory Equipment Management (50%)
    • The student will be involved in organizing, cleaning, and cataloging lab equipment. This could involve sorting equipment based on its use or application, ensuring that everything is in working order, and maintaining an inventory system for easy access and accountability

    • Support for the Sustainability Pod (35%)
    • The student's role would include assisting in planning and executing various activities like booth development for events, participating in expos or exhibits, and potentially engaging the public or school community in sustainability practices and education

    • Field Work and Data Collection (15%)
    • The student may also be involved in practical, hands-on work outside the lab. This could involve collecting samples, conducting environmental surveys, or gathering data pertinent to sustainability studies and research. This aspect of the job provides a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations and gain experience in fieldwork methodologies

Qualifications & Experience
    • Currently enrolled in a program related to science, chemistry, the environment, or sustainability
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
    • Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills
    • Ability to organize and format documents
    • Working knowledge of technical and educational terminology
