The English Language School (ELS) at the Faculty of Education invites applications for a 6-month appointment for the position of Student Engagement Centre (SEC) Assistant. The appointment will run February 1, 2023 to July 31, 2023.

Location - The work location for this position is downtown Edmonton at Enterprise Square, 10230 Jasper Avenue.

Department/Position Summary

The Student Engagement Centre (SEC) at the University of Alberta supports English Language School (ELS) students by providing additional language activities and opportunities to meet fellow students on campus. To help students better engage with their English studies, the SEC offers daily sessions that focus on a range of skills, such as listening, reading, writing, speaking, and intercultural skills.

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the SEC Assistant connects students to their instructors and the Student Engagement Centre, helping to ensure that each student is set up for success, while also creating a welcoming environment that encourages communication and consultation for students who need non-academic support. The SEC Assistant is also responsible for maintaining the centre’s blog, completing assigned administrative tasks, and posting on social media.

Additionally, in an effort to familiarize students with the University of Alberta campus and the Edmonton community, working with the SEC Instructor, the SEC Assistant supports a wide range of extracurricular activities.

Student Engagement Centre Duties

Content Creation (60%):

  • Creates workshop activity posters
  • Creates social media postings, including editing videos and photos
  • Under the guidance of the SEC Instructor, films, creates content and produces weekly vlogs
  • Manages ELS social media platforms (@ualbertaels): Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok and Twitter
  • Creates Kahoot Cup activities
  • Under the guidance of the SEC Instructor, films and produces ELS promotional/testimonial videos

Communication + Administration (40%):

  • Communicates with students to support their learning environment and to inform about activities
  • Responds to student emails and social media messages
  • Under the guidance of the SEC Instructor, helps plan and guide weekly extracurricular activities
  • Consults with students and volunteers to generate extra help for activities
  • Contributes activity ideas to the Student Engagement Centre Instructor
  • Supports Student Engagement Centre Instructor with daily workshops
  • Maintains the Student Engagement Centre blog, the Galaxy Digital Volunteer website and the ELS’s Youtube channel
  • Arranges end-of-term student social events

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or post- secondary diploma

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong skills in content creation, video production and post-production
  • Experienced with media relations
  • Experienced with social media strategies
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
