Compensation Range

Job Summary
The Undergraduate Student Development Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating programs that support personal and professional development, build career-readiness skills, and contribute to a culture of leadership for students in the Faculty of Applied Science. The Undergraduate Student Development Coordinator is instrumental in the delivery of programs and services designed to support a culture of student learning and development in the Faculty of Applied Science.


The Undergraduate Student Development Coordinator delivers programs and services in support of undergraduate student learning, leadership and career development, orientation and transition, and mentorship in Applied Science. The Undergraduate Student Development Coordinator works with students, staff, faculty, alumni, student government (EUS/AMS), faculty departments, and other student service areas in pursuit of these goals.
The Undergraduate Student Development Coordinator is expected to work in strong collaboration across the Faculty, to both lead and support student staff and volunteers, and to work independently to complete assigned duties.

Organizational Status
The Coordinator reports directly to the Manager, Experiential Learning  & Professional Development. The coordinator also works in collaboration with the Director, Experiential Learning and Academic Services and the Senior Manager, Business Development and Employer Engagement. Collaboration with colleagues in the Vice-President Students Office (Centre for Student Involvement and Careers) is necessary for university-wide activities, such as orientations and transition programming. Collaboration with the Professional Development Officer at the UBC Engineering Okanagan campus for cross-campus programs or initiatives (e.g., the Engineering Mentoring Program) will also be expected. 
Work Performed

1.    Orientation and Transition Programming - Planning, Coordination, and Implementation
Under the strategic vision and guidance of the Director, Experiential Learning and Academic Services, coordinate all aspects of the Engineering’s Orientation and Transition programming, including:
-    advertising and marketing programs, recruiting, hiring, and training student leaders, identifying system requirements and managing logistical planning, developing action plans to achieve program targets and outcomes, tracking and evaluating program success, and assessing student leader learning.


2.    Engineering Mentoring Program - Planning, Coordination, and Implementation
Under the strategic vision and guidance of the Senior Manager, Business Development and Employer Engagement, coordinate all aspects of Engineering Mentoring Programs such as:
-    advertising and marketing programs, recruiting, hiring, and training student leaders, identifying system requirements and managing logistical planning, developing action plans to achieve program targets and outcomes, tracking and evaluating program success, and assessing student leader learning.


3.    Student Development Program Coordination
Under strategic vision and guidance of the Manager, Experiential Learning & Professional Development, assist in all aspects of the development, implementation, and delivery of student development activities designed to enhance the Applied Science undergraduate student experience, such as:
-    Coordinate and implement existing large-scale student development programs, services, and events designed to bridge students curricular and co-curricular experiences.
-    Assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating leadership training for student leaders focusing on encouraging students to develop leadership goals and skills
-    Supporting current and emerging student leaders, identifying and removing obstacles to student development, and supporting student leaders in developing sustainable student development programs
-    Serving as students first point of contact for any student development programming
-    Participate in building resources and program supports (both online and face to face) to support and enhance student academic success and engagement, identify gaps in the current provision of resources and program supports, and develop sustainable solutions, which may include the development and implementation of new programs and services, that support and enhance the student academic and engagement experience.


4.    Professional Development Advising and Support
-    Mentor, coach, and assist individual and groups of students in their overall personal and professional development. Responsible for building relationships, advising, and providing student support in: student involvement and engagement. career-readiness and professional development, awards and scholarships, fostering academic excellence and leadership inside and outside of the classroom, non-routine issues (both personal and professional)
-    Coordinate networking events with industry professionals and senior students to create opportunities for students to explore specializations.
-    Provide professional development workshops to support students in their career and classroom participation.


5.    Communication
-    Support student-facing communications representing the Dean’s Office, Student Engagement (including regular and pre-existing e-newsletters, social media channels, digital signage, webinars, Canvas courses, Qualtrics surveys, etc.)
-    Identify opportunities and implement communication campaigns with support from the Marketing and Communications team to target communications to targeted groups within Engineering student population
-    Support student development cycle processes, including (but not limited to) updating content on the Experiential Learning Hub website, online academic calendars, forms, promotional materials (e.g. brochures, fact sheets etc.), Canvas courses, and Qualtrics surveys


6.    Other Duties:
-    Attend and participate in administration and other meetings as needed.
-    Maintain and build relationships with alumni and industry with support from the Senior Manager, Business Development and Employer Engagement
-    Maintain continued consultation with faculty stakeholders to evaluate and modify programming each year
-    Facilitate research awards allocation in coordination with APSC programs and VP Students office
-    Remain up to date on the priorities and initiatives in the Faculty of Applied Science.
-    Performs other duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may cause serious results and identifiable deterioration to faculty and student relations; reduce services; cause embarrassment; increase event and program costs; and impact negatively the Faculty’s reputation and accountability with organizations, students, faculty and staff. Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Decisions affect the credibility of the Faculty of Applied Science, and hence the success of these initiatives, university and community-wide.
Supervision Received
Working under the direction of the Manager, Experiential Learning & Professional Development, and in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Business Development and Employer Engagement, and the Director, Experiential Learning & Academic Services, the incumbent exercises resourcefulness in the coordination and delivery of student development programs in the Faculty of Applied Science. This position is expected to function within clearly articulated priorities and objectives. Work is reviewed for quality and effectiveness of results.
Supervision Given
May supervise or advise student staff or volunteers in the coordination and delivery of programs, including recruitment, hiring, and training.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in relevant discipline preferred.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders. A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking. Proven ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives. Proven ability to organize events, lead promotion activities, and coordinate and support student development programs. Ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment. Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines efficiently. Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems. Experience in designing and delivering training and developmental or skill building workshops. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Knowledge of the field of student development and related literature and research would be an asset.
