Reporting to the Assistant to the Deans and Administrative Team Lead, and collaborating with the academic leadership team within the School of Hospitality and Tourism, we are currently recruiting for a Student and Program Advisor to assist current and prospective students with defining, planning and achieving their educational goals. The Advisor supports a learning environment that ensures inclusivity and access for all learners and provides guidance, advocacy and support to student learning and development, and endeavors to build and nurture transformational relationships with students to support student success. This role also provides integral support to Academic Chairs who champion all aspects of academic experience within the school.
Working collaboratively with the school leadership team, faculty, staff, SAIT community and industry, you will help us on our journey to become recognized as one of the world’s preeminent schools in hospitality, tourism, and culinary arts education. Student success is the bedrock of our success, and as such you will be a champion of student experience, program excellence and innovation.
The Role
- Student Progression and Timely Completion - 40%
- Advise applicants, current students and other interested parties with regard to admission requirements, course content, fees, graduation requirements, student loan requirements, student awards, accommodations, and the transferring of post-secondary credits.
- Advise students with regard to School/SAIT policies on supplemental examinations, course registration and drop/add procedures, grade appeals, scholarships/Bursaries, subject withdrawal procedure, program withdrawals and transfers.
- Incorporate preparation, facilitation, documentation and assessment of advising interactions in guiding students to become successful, resilient and independent learners.
- Support students with clear course mapping/planning to help them navigate their learning journey and time at SAIT
- Student Employment Planning and Development - 30%
- Advise students on employment opportunities and careers within the program and direct students to internal and external resources for personal and professional development.
- Guide students building a resume, interview skills and job searching.
- Provide support and guidance to students as they complete their internship work experience as part of their Work Integrated Learning journey.
- Academic Administration - 20%
- Create reports and provide analysis of student data to aid Academic Chairs with program decisions.
- Maintain databases for instructor teaching hours. Compile reports for academic chairs, dean and financial analyst.
- As a member of the School Administration team, provide support and collaborate as needed with the administration team
- School Events and Activities - 10%
- Work with Academic Chairs on recruitment, onboarding and retention initiatives.
- Provides school and campus tours to prospective students to showcase our labs and live operation facilities.
- Attend/coordinate internal and external events including information sessions, open house and orientation events.
- Provide information sessions at High Schools to perspective students.
- Position may require out of town work in day trips to 1-3 week stays.
Qualifications & Experience
- Two years of relevant experience in academic advising, planning or counselling.
- Strong knowledge of post-secondary education programming, environment, policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated computer literacy; Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365.
- Conflict resolution, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred:
- Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline (education) is an asset.
- Experience working in Hospitality is preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Familiarity with Banner by Ellucian would be an asset.
Knowledge & Skills
- Empathy: success in this role is routed in an ability to build trust with students and provide the needed guidance and support. Being able to connect with students who have varied and diverse needs is vital.

- Service Focus: maintains a professional and courteous manner with students, instructors, Academic Chairs, and other internal and external SAIT customers. Displays strong communication both written and verbal.
- Excellence: demonstrates excellence through a conscientious and thorough approach to the work always striving for a high standard that adheres with SAIT policies and procedures. Ability to learn quickly and be flexible to implement changes quickly.
