Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – PHY205H1S – The Physics of Everyday Life (0.5 FCE) – Emergency Posting

Course description: An introduction to the physics of everyday life. This conceptual course looks at everyday objects to learn about the basis for our modern technological world. Topics may include anything from automobiles to weather. (PHY205H1 is primarily intended as a Breadth Requirement course for students in the Humanities and Social Sciences with no university-level background in physics. Any student with university-level credit in physics, including students with secondary school transfer credits in physics is ineligible to take this course).

Estimated TA support: TBA (TA support is contingent upon enrolment)

Class schedule:

Lectures: Tuesday 1:00pm-3:00pm and Thursday 1:00pm-3:00pm

Tutorials: Tuesday 3:00pm-5:00pm or Thursday 3:00pm-5:00pm (Please note the tutorials will be led by the Teaching Assistant)

The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Sessional dates of appointment: July 1, 2024 – August 31, 2024

Salary: Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,930.79
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,326.62
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics required
• Previous experience in teaching introductory physics at the University level required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience teaching a similar course to non-science students

Description of duties:

• Coordination of an undergraduate course
• Preparation and delivery of lectures in this course
• Supervision and training of teaching assistant(s) assigned to course, including overseeing the TAs DDAH forms
• Preparation, supervision and grading of tests and examinations in accordance with University regulations; submission of final grades
• Providing scheduled office hours for academic counseling of students
