MSC2009H Ethics and Professionalism in BMC

This seminar course (credit/no credit) addresses professional issues such as how to establish a small business, ethics and fair practice, contracts and copyright, pricing, book-keeping, etc. Students produce professional curriculum vitae and learn how to promote their work through the establishment of a small business and during full-time employment. Self-promotion is stressed. The material is presented for information only with the objective of instilling a sense of pride and professionalism regarding the field of Biomedical Communications. Objectives of the course are to: understand the importance of professionalism in the field; be aware of sound business practice; be informed regarding contracts, pricing and copyright; understand basic bookkeeping as it pertains to the profession; be aware of employment strategies and the application process; be informed regarding plagiarism and artists’ rights.

This course includes site visits to select biomedical communication companies in the Greater Toronto Area. The site visits take place outside lecture times.

Class schedule: In Person. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (ET), April 30 to June 25, 2024. Industry site visits to be scheduled.

Sessional dates of appointment: April 30 to June 30, 2024.

Salary In accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement): Effective September 1, 2023

  • Sessional Lecturer I - $18,915.79 (Y, full course) & $9,457.90 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 4 per cent vacation pay;
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term - $19,861.58 (Y, full course) & $9930.79 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 6 per cent vacation pay;
  • Sessional Lecturer II - $20,243.53 (Y, full course) & $10,121.77 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 6 per cent vacation pay;
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $20,653.23 (Y, full course) & $10,326.62 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 6 per cent vacation pay;
  • Sessional Lecturer III -$20,725.52 (Y, full course) & $10,362.76 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 6 per cent vacation pay;
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $21,140.03 (Y, full course) & $10,570.02 (H, half Course, 0.5 FCE) includes 6 per cent vacation pay.

Qualifications: A minimum MScBMC (or equivalent), and/or experience working as a professional illustrator (scientific or otherwise), academic qualifications, ability, and suitability for the position. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level would be a plus.

Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; the development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and examinations; calculation and submission of grades; arranging and participating in site visits to Biomedical Communications firms; holding a minimum regular office hours of 2 hours per week. (The mode of instruction for this course is in-person. However, if this changes for any reason, you will be provided with as much notice as practicable.)
