Position: Sessional Lecturer I (1 positions available at 100%)

Course title and code: Making Sense of Accidents - APS1034H:

Course description: Despite the best of engineering practices that include a focus on reliability, human factors, and

quality improvement, severe accidents involving complex technological systems occur regularly: bridges collapse, chemical plants catch fire and explode, airplanes crash, and nuclear reactors meltdown. The most comprehensive approach to understanding the causes of such disasters is based on systems engineering, which highlights the limits of traditional event-chain models of

causation. The course focuses on this approach using a group project but also provides an overview of the various sociological theories that attempted to elucidate the organizational and psychological factors underlying the failure of sociotechnical systems.

Estimated Enrolment: Approximately 25 students

Estimated TA support: TBA

Class schedule: TBA

Sessional date of appointment: Summer Session 2024.

Salary: Minimum level of pay is $9,457.89 which includes vacation pay and may increase depending on applicant’s level of experience and suitability for the position.

Qualifications: This course introduces the main theoretical approaches of systems thinking, organization structure and crisis management for understanding catastrophic accidents. Highlighting the socio-technical limits to the prevention of severe accidents, it emphasizes the importance of incorporating such insights in engineering design with the aim of reducing the likelihood of disasters.
