Position: Sessional Lecturer

Course Title and Code: CHM135H1 – Chemistry: Physical Principles

Course Description:  This course is recommended for students in the life and health science programs.  The course opens with an introduction to atomic theory; fundamental concepts of spectroscopy and chemical bonding are also introduced.  After a brief review of reaction stoichiometries, the structure of matter – gases, liquids, solids and beyond – will be discussed.  The solution state is then presented with an emphasis on properties of solutions including chemical equilibria in solution, particularly those of acids and bases.  The course concludes with an introduction to the kinetics and the thermodynamics of reactions of both chemical and biochemical interest.

Estimated TA support: 135 hours

Estimated course enrolment: 164 students

In-Person Class schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (9:30 am – 12:00 pm)

Sessional dates of appointment: July 1, 2024, to August 31, 2024 (0.33 FCE)

$6,554.32 for Sessional Lecturer I Long-Term
$6,680.36 for Sessional Lecturer II
$6,815.57 for Sessional Lecturer II Long-Term
$6,839.42 for Sessional Lecturer III
$6,976.21 for Sessional Lecturer III Long-Term

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field is required. Experience lecturing and/or coordinating laboratories in general or physical chemistry at the university level will be preferred.


Description of duties:  The Department of Chemistry requires a sessional lecturer to coordinate in-person lectures for 4 weeks in CHM135H1 (Chemistry: Physical Principles) during the 2024 Summer session.  The successful applicant will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all the attendant organizational issues of lecture preparation and delivery, supervising tutors, setting, supervising and marking exams, calculation and submission of final course marks, course evaluations, holding office hours, and so forth.
