Position Description

The Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach the courses listed below in the 2024 Spring and Summer terms (pending funding and sufficient enrolments). 

The Spring 2024 term runs from May 1 to June 17 (with most classes beginning May 6), followed by the Registrar final exam period, which runs June 19 to June 22. The Summer 2024 term runs from June 24 to August 6, followed by the Registrar final exam period, which runs August 8 to 12. Please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.

Courses of Instruction
In general, instructor responsibilities include: course instruction; assessment and grading; creation and management of the course D2L shell; ongoing communication with students, lab personnel (where applicable), and staff; and, other assigned duties (as applicable).

Spring 2024

KNES 201: Activity: Essence & Experience
Participate in various activities and movement patterns and the study of the fundamental factors that influence the activities we choose and the way we move. Please note that this posting is for the lecture and activity components of the course, both of which are instructed in-person.
Lecture: MTWR, 12:00-12:50
Activity Labs: MTWR, 13:00-14:20
In their cover letter, applicants must clearly state what two activities they are able to instruct for the activity labs (2 x 3-week blocks).

KNES 244: Introduction to the Sociology of Movement Cultures
An introduction to sociological perspectives on movement cultures (e.g., sport, dance, physical education, exercise & fitness), with a particular focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The instructor will teach both lecture and lab components.
Lecture: Online, asynchronous
Lab: Online, asynchronous

KNES 259: Human Anatomy and Physiology I
The instructional approach is a combination of systematic and regional anatomy and physiology with some surface anatomy and radiologic considerations. General cell physiology, bone anatomy, neurophysiology and muscular physiology, as well as skeletal structure, types of connective tissues, structure of joints and muscles of the axial and appendicular skeleton will be covered. Laboratories utilize human tissue materials, anatomical models, charts, and prosected cadavers and cadaver specimens. Please note that this course is typically co-taught; one instructor for the anatomy portion and another instructor for the physiology component. Cover letters should clearly indicate for which component an application is being submitted.
Lecture: Online, asynchronous
Lab: The course instructor will be required to coordinate with the lab instructor but does not teach the lab component; the lab component is also online, asynchronous.

KNES 263: Quantitative Biomechanics
Basic principles of force system analysis, impulse-momentum, work-energy and particle kinematics applied to biological structures, including extensive mathematical analyses. The instructor will teach both lecture and lab components.

KNES 503: Risk and Movement Cultures
Topics may include, but are not limited to, studies in sport psychology, human physiology, biomechanics or leadership. In this course, students will critically examine how risk is constructed in and across a variety of movement cultures.

KNES 676: Clinical Exercise Physiology I
Exercise for clinical populations: exercise assessment and prescription for disease modification. The instructor will teach both lecture and lab components.
Lecture: Tuesdays, 09:00-11:50
Lab: Thursdays, 09:00-11:50

KNES 693: Practicum I
The practicum will consist of multiple experiences in applied physiology environments.
Lab: TBA

Summer 2024

KNES 260: Human Anatomy and Physiology II
The instructional approach is a combination of systematic and regional anatomy and physiology with some surface anatomy and radiologic considerations. Physiology and anatomy of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, renal and gastrointestinal systems as well as anatomy of the reproductive and integumentary systems and special senses will be covered. Laboratories utilize human tissue materials, anatomical models, charts, and prosected cadavers and cadaver specimens. Please note that this course is typically co-taught; one instructor for the anatomy portion and another instructor for the physiology component. Cover letters should clearly indicate for which component an application is being submitted.
Lecture: Online, asynchronous

KNES 621: Collaborative Enquiry in Applied Exercise Physiology II
Instruction in critical enquiry, critical appraisal, applied problem solving frameworks, and research design within applied exercise physiology settings. Includes the successful development of an independent project proposal.
Seminar: Tuesdays, 12:00-12:50

KNES 677: Clinical Exercise Physiology II

KNES 694: Practicum I

Position Requirements
For all courses listed above, applicants must meet the following qualifications/requirements:

  • Earned a PhD in Kinesiology or a related field; a master’s degree in Kinesiology or a related field will be considered.
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the university level and related to the content of the course(s) to which application is being made.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Experience teaching virtually will be considered an asset.
