Department/Faculty Summary
University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) is an operational unit within Facilities and Operations . As the public safety agency for the University community, UAPS works to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and the general public.
Position Summary
A Patrol Sergeant is one of four such positions reporting to the Manager. This position is responsible for day-to-day oversight of a team of up to five (5) Peace Officers and effectively performs these duties with a minimal amount of supervision. This person oversees the daily activities including directing the activities of Peace Officers, reviewing/approving submitted reports, responding to high-priority calls, decision making, ensuring compliance with policy/procedures and performance reviews. A Patrol Sergeant is also responsible for the coaching and mentoring of Peace Officers within their unit and perform temporary acting assignments in the role of Manager as required.
Duties
- Supervises patrol in the completion of daily duties; provides support, direction, supervision, and assistance to personnel dealing with a variety of situations
- Oversees response to all calls and approves all documented incidents and reports completed by Peace Officers, additional supervision over all security agents and dispatchers on duty, and training of new recruits
- Accountable for all service issue equipment including master keys, radio equipment, and vehicles; confirms equipment is in proper working order
- Supervises staff in the field to ensure that win-win results are achieved for the University, the complainant, and the increased competency of staff involved
- Ensures staff operates within departmental policies, procedures and protocols, applicable laws, code of ethics and other acceptable practices
- Reports to and briefs the Manager regarding field operations of the department, including new situations, updates, and the process and development of ongoing cases
- Provides coverage for the Manager during absences identifying interim actions as appropriate
- Identifies situations that pose risk to the University; coaches University departments in foreseeing and handling of potential emergency situations; compiles and submits reports on high-risk areas/situations as requested
- Exercises discretionary enforcement authority under numerous Provincial statutes and University policy; serves legal documents
- Directs “first response” provided by the department to all crisis situations within the University community.
- Liaises with other law enforcement and first responder agencies as required
- Investigates and prepares preliminary investigation reports
- Provides testimony in a court of law and University hearings where required
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a diploma/degree program in Law Enforcement/Security or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience, either as a serving police officer in Canada, or serving Alberta Peace Officer, with moving traffic and liquor enforcement authority preferred
- Must either hold a valid Community Peace Officer Level 1 Peace Officer Appointment (Qualifies through the completion of Alberta Solicitor General Induction Training Program Community Peace Officer 1) or be able to obtain a Community Peace Officer Level 1 Peace Officer Appointment
- Successful completion of a Certified Criminal Record Verification that includes fingerprint submissions Valid driver's license (Alberta Class 5 or equivalent)

- A recent clear driver's abstract demonstrating a good driving record with less than six demerits and less than three moving violations during a three-year period; Out of Province drivers must provide a 3 year abstract from the licensing authority
- Must be able to meet all Physical, Psychological, Hearing and Vision standards, including P.A.R.E. testing prior to offer employment
- Possess control tactics / officer Safety certification, and be able to recertify in the use of a baton and OC spray at a minimum of every three years
- Knowledge of the Peace Officer Act, Peace Officer Manual and related provincial statues
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong leadership, administration, staff motivation and supervisory skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Significant supervisory experience, including time spent as an acting Sergeant.
- Demonstrated ability to defuse potentially volatile situations, and to recognize and respond appropriately to dangerous situations; skilled in exercising tact and sound judgement in dealing with difficult situations with the public; understand officer safety techniques.
