In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement , this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page  and annual salary range of $65,348 to $108,916.

Location: This role is in-person and work takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Department/Faculty Summary

The Faculty of Engineering is looking for a leader whom will be responsible for the development, implementation, and ongoing execution of overall risk management programs, under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Safety & Risk Management. The incumbent performs key leadership duties (identifying, analyzing, planning, organizing, influencing, etc.).

Position Summary

The importance of being able to perform work on campus in a safe, stable and repeatable manner is paramount for all levels of research, teaching, and general operations within the University of Alberta. Safety & Risk Management touches virtually every aspect, and requires an extremely agile, flexible, compassionate approach, all while being a subject matter expert in a very technical, ever changing, and sometimes highly regulated field. The outcome and impact of this position will be felt at all levels of the organization. From undergraduate students participating in lectures or their first teaching lab, to some of our world class researchers being able to perform experimental research (often with high hazards) which has never been done before, the impact of Safety and Risk Management cannot be understated.

Duties

  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of the university’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) management system & ensures Engineering safety and risk management program aligns and evolves as necessary.
  • Contributes professional and managerial expertise to the development of plans, objectives, solutions, policies and procedures.
  • Participates in on-call service, responds to incidents and emergencies and participates in the Crisis Management Team
  • Oversees, leads and participates in incident investigations
  • Oversee, undertake & advise on Engineering safety training programs
  • Collaborates and advises with senior leaders and researchers to accommodate new/unique projects and initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in Engineering with a focus in safety and risk management area coupled with minimum five years related experience in health, safety and environmental management
  • Holds a Canadian Risk Manager (CRM) designation (or in process)

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity and experience with the following:

  • Federal, provincial, municipal acts, regulations, codes, standards, bylaws and guidelines associated with occupational, health and safety and hazardous materials
  • Regulatory and compliance management
  • Hazard assessment and control
  • Incident investigation procedures and report writing
  • Engineering project management or equivalent (ie. PMP)
  • Safety & Loss management
  • Certifications such as TDG, WHMIS, First Aid, construction safety
  • Fire extinguisher training
  • Chematix
  • Sitecore, Cascade CMS, web content development
  • Knowledge in safety related tools, instrumentation and test equipment
