Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Prospect Research and Management, the Senior Research Officer serves as a lead hand for the prospect research team, providing training and mentorship for research staff, coordinating research requests, and working closely with the Assistant Director to foster a collaborative working environment and increase the efficiency and the effectiveness of prospect research.

The incumbent is responsible for providing a full range of research and strategy support for the major and principal gifts teams, with a focus on prospects and donors with principal gift and high levels of major gift potentials. Through leadership in prospect research and identification, pipeline development, and media monitoring, the Senior Research Officer directly contributes to the success of the University’s fundraising objectives.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Excellent knowledge and a deep understanding of the role of prospect research in major gift fundraising.
• Proven success in providing prospect research for fundraising campaigns and initiatives.
• Advanced knowledge of principal tools and best practices for prospect research and proficiency with various online databases such as iWave, Grant Connect, LexisNexis, Factiva, SEDAR, SEDI, etc.
• Proficiency in analyzing and interpreting complex business and financial documents for wealth assessment. Familiarity with various screening strategies and methodologies, including data mining, segmentation, and analytics.
• Excellent analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse audiences, including researchers, fundraisers, and senior-level administration.
• Strong project management, organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Commitment to providing excellent client service.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to present research findings and recommendations.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to multi-task, work well under significant time pressures and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work with a minimal degree of supervision within a dedicated team framework.
• Understanding of privacy and access to information legislation. Demonstrated professionalism in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically and with discretion.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of applications including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Teams, and experience working with a relational database, preferably Banner Advancement.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Master’s degree in a relevant field (Master of Library & Information Science preferred).
• Minimum of five years’ experience in prospect research.
• Project supervision, training and coaching experience is required to be successful in this role.

Assets:
• Experience in a post-secondary institution or major nonprofit.
• Familiarity with Banner Advancement.

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person. If this happens, you will work with your direct manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. You are required to follow all University policies and directives, including to set up a safe and confidential workspace in a remote location and ensure all Carleton property (intellectual and other) is safeguarded. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
