Carleton University is looking to hire a Senior Research Computer Engineer. Working in Research Computing Services, the Senior Research Computer Engineer will be a centralized resource who will lead research application development across all faculties and departments. The incumbent will have the exciting opportunity to develop customized software applications to further high impact, world class research projects in several different fields. They will work directly with professors and research groups to understand the software gaps in their workflows and have the autonomy to suggest and implement unique solutions. They will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects in a dynamic environment and will be constantly learning new technologies. The incumbent will be seasoned software developer with advanced knowledge in mainstream programming languages, is comfortable working with a variety of wireless communication technologies and specializes in real-time programming, real-time operating systems, and embedded systems. Working as a senior member of a team of qualified software developers, the Senior Research Computer Engineer plays a strategic role in advancing the research programs of faculty across the university.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Research Computer Engineer will lead research application development at Carleton University. This individual, as a member of Research Computing Services (RCS), a unit of
Information Technology Services, is a centralized resource who will work directly with researchers and research groups across all faculties to design and implement custom research software, with specialization in real-time programming, real-time operating systems, and embedded systems. The incumbent will also be comfortable working with a variety of wireless communication technologies as well as integrating hardware and software. This role will involve working directly with a varied group of clients including faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and other IT professionals on campus. The incumbent will be required to liaise with the research community and other stakeholders to ensure needs are being met and to evaluate gaps in provided services.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of software development and ITS policies, procedures, and processes
• Knowledge of office as well as the broader university academic units, departments, and
divisions
• Knowledge of office productivity software and databases, internet browsers and search
engines, discipline-specific software, enterprise software, and technology devices
• Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context
• Experience as a software developer having supported or been involved in computationally intensive research projects at an academic institution or in industry.
• Excellent knowledge of programming, development, and project management in a complex environment.
• Excellent knowledge of modern software development methods, frameworks, environments, and the Software Development Life Cycle
• Advanced working knowledge with mainstream programming languages (python, javascript, java, c/c++, R, Matlab)
• Experience with Advanced Research Computing (ARC) resources
• Experience integrating hardware and software components to achieve specified goals
• Experience with software interfacing with hardware sensors and associated analytics
• Experience with different wireless communication technologies (e.g. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi,
ZigBee, dedicated RF)
• Experience with real-time programming, real-time operating systems and embedded systems.
• Excellent project management skills and use of tools to ensure projects are completed on time
• Ability to reach set and agreed to goals while working independently with limited supervision
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to analyze, decipher and understand technical problems, and to find, develop, and
implement software solutions where there may be little local expertise or existing material
• Excellent negotiation, interpersonal skills, and ability to explain difficult concepts.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of bachelor’s degree in computer science
• A minimum of five (5) years of software development and research computing experience in a research focused environment. Supervisory experience in an IT management position is an asset
