Compensation Range

The Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) supports business students’ personal and professional development journey to responsible leadership through customized services focused on self-exploration, career development and access to business communities. Our team supports approximately 5,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs.

With a focus on providing high-quality and consistent student experience, the Senior Manager, Career Development Programming supports the Business Career Centre’s leadership team in conceptualizing and developing the BCC career development strategy. The Senior Manager evaluates the success of the strategy and provides leadership for the evolution of the BCC’s career programming and development model, including career coaching/advising, educational programming, and resources. They are also responsible for onboarding and continual training, learning and development of student-facing career employees as it relates to the career development strategy.

The Senior Manager oversees the effective operation, assessment and evolution of the career development practices to meet the needs of a diverse student population. In collaboration with senior leadership and student-facing teams within the BCC, determines and assesses metrics for the success of career development programming.

The Senior Manager, Career Development Programming, will achieve results by leading meaningful initiatives that align with the BCC’s overarching strategy and relevant critical success factors of:

Organizational Status

Reports to the Director, Service Excellence. Is part of the cross-functional Service Excellence Team that supports the delivery, promotion and evaluation of the centre’s services, resources, and programs.

Works in close collaboration with student-facing career development employees (coaches, facilitators and educators), and other members of the Business Career Centre including senior leadership. They may also work with faculty, students and internal and external partners, as needed, to achieve the BCC’s strategic objectives and priorities.


Work Performed

Career development strategy and model

  • Contributes to the development, manages the implementation and leads the ongoing evaluation of the BCC’s career development model and its success, including developing measures for evaluations, incorporating career development theories, principles and insights, such as job market and future work trends, to enhance the centre’s practice and student experience.

  • Provides comprehensive advice and equips the Director with information to make decisions that will influence the development and changes to the career development strategy based on their ongoing external and internal research.

  • Responsible for assessing and evaluating the career development model, ensuring the right type and level of support in each of the core areas, and ensures that services and support evolve to meet changing needs, trends, technology, etc.

  • Responsible for aligning the practices and processes within the career development services, in particular coaching, to provide a high-quality student experience.

  • Determines metrics and assessment tools to oversee the ongoing collection and evaluation of the career coaching and career development programming. Provides recommendations on programs and influences service evolution, redesign, and enhancement.

  • Designs, manages and evaluates onboarding for new career coaching employees as well as continual learning and development for career development employees at the BCC.

  • Plans and leads regular learning and development sessions for career development employees through the bi-weekly Career Manager Development Meetings. 

  • Provides expertise in career development, coaching and educational design to the BCC. Advises and consults with student-facing teams at the BCC on learning and career development needs and best practices, including coaching, assessments, evaluation, facilitation and learning technology.

  • Works independently, in close collaboration with the Service Excellence Team, and by leading a committee of career coaches to achieve the goals of the career development strategy.

  • Manages the suite of tools used to support career development needs, that includes assessing engagement/usage and satisfaction with the tools, provides recommendations, leads the development of new resources where needed and adapts existing ones.

Student career coaching

  • Develops and facilitates select career development-themed classes and workshops for students, in collaboration with the BCC’s student-facing careers employees.

  • Works collaboratively with careers employees at the BCC to ensure career development programming and resources support a consistent and positive student experience.

  • Provides one-to-one and group career coaching to UBC Sauder students from undergraduate and graduate programs.

Learning tools and platforms

  • Responsible for identifying resources (including online resources/platforms and educational materials) and leading the creation and evaluation of new resources needed to support our career development services.

  • Researches and evaluates existing resources and technology, used by the BCC to enhance the student experience and scale career development services, making recommendations to the Director for improvement.

  • Directs the creation of new in-house career development resources to support the diverse career interests and needs of UBC Sauder student populations.

  • Identifies opportunities and influences strategy changes based on their ongoing external and internal research.

  • Evaluate different vendors and work with BTMO or other units to select and implement the technology, when needed.

Faculty and partner liaison

  • Liaises with UBC Sauder stakeholders, including other departments, faculty and student groups, to build awareness of and support the integration of our career development model within the wider school as appropriate.

  • Liaises with UBC Sauder faculty to monitor new academic course content and revises our career development model and related activities, as necessary, to augment the classroom experience.

  • Liaises with UBC-wide partners (e.g., the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers), as needed, to link and coordinate relevant student services and support, resources, and activities.


Other duties

  • Leads other projects and initiatives related to career development programming to achieve the strategic objectives of the Service Excellence Team, the Business Career Centre and the school.

  • Performs other duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Senior Manager contributes to the strategic direction and goals of the Business Career Centre, and is responsible for a wide range of decisions including the strategy and delivery of career programming and employee training.

 

Incorrect decisions or ill-informed strategies could compromise the integrity of the Business Career Centre as well as jeopardize the reputation of the UBC Sauder School of Business. Poor management of staff may lead to inefficiencies, discontent, or grievances.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Director, Service Excellence and works with considerable autonomy. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of specific goals and objectives.
Supervision Given
May manage employees, student workers and/or contractors.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Must have experience in designing, delivering and evaluating programming for students and/or professionals.

  • Must have experience presenting in front of large groups, including facilitating team meetings, committees, classes and workshops (virtual and in-person).

  • Must have extensive coaching experience and/or be a certified coach from a verified credentialing body.

  • Demonstrated expertise leveraging innovative learning technology is an asset.

  • Experience working with career development practices, theory and assessments for personal and professional development is an asset.

  • Certification or working knowledge in career development assessment tools: CliftonStrengths, RocheMartin Emotional Capital or other human capital assessment tools is an asset

  • Knowledge in career trends in the changing world of work, as well as labor market/industry knowledge is an asset.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with high attention to detail and proven ability to prioritize competing demands and initiatives.

  • Strong communications skills (listening, verbal, written); presentation preparation and delivery, including engaging with and motivating stakeholders.

  • Interpersonal agility, with the ability to collaborate and influence multiple stakeholders at all levels.

  • Hands-on knowledge of creating and managing online content and resources is an asset.

  • Must have experience with MS Office applications, including advanced Word and PowerPoint skills as well as intermediate Excel skills.
