Department/Faculty Summary

University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS) is an operational unit within Facilities and Operations . As the public safety agency for the University community, UAPS works to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and the general public.

Position Summary

Reporting to the UAPS Community Liaison Officer, the Security Agent (Residence) performs proactive foot patrols with another Security Agent of the various residences on North Campus to enhance safety and security, and develop positive contacts in a uniquely diverse community. The Security Agent (Residence) support Residence Services staff and residents with general complaints, calls for services and crime prevention. This position also helps UAPS patrol members and other emergency responders for critical incidents within residences.

Duties

  • Proactively patrol residences of the University
  • Detect and report incidents that require a higher level of Peace Officer and police response.
  • Provides information and assistance to the university community and guests/visitors.
  • Participates in community crime prevention programs and education activities.
  • Assists in building evacuations for life/safety incidents, and provides perimeter security and crowd control during emergency operations.
  • Takes notes, completes written reports and enters information into database as required.
  • Attends court and tribunals, provides testimony and conducts oneself in a professional manner.
  • Performs first aid. 
  • Performs other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum high school education by Alberta Education standards (or equivalent)
  • Must hold an Individual license under the Alberta Security Services and Investigators Act.
  • Emergency or Standard First Aid Certification and Level C CPR with AED.
  • Obtain clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows and Google applications
  • Able to work shift work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a security related diploma. A university degree or equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Security management specific education. Significant security related experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Several years of progressive security experience
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment. Knowledge of the University of Alberta campus is an asset.
  • High level of proficiency with Google applications
