Research Lab Coordinator, Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases

Position Overview

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Lab Coordinator.  This Full-time Fixed Term is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The research focuses on developing novel immunotherapies for pediatric and adult cancers using a variety of cutting-edge methods and techniques. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Laboratory Management

  • Ensure laboratory spaces are clean and organized at all times by creating systems and garnering buy in for implementation of those systems from labs members (i.e. schedule routine laboratory cleaning program, re-stocking of supplies, equipment maintenance logs etc.)

  • Create and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to laboratory functions, in collaboration with lab members

  • Create and implement a digitized laboratory notebook system

  • Coordinate on-site training for new and existing staff. Track lab personnel training and certification

  • Ensure lab members are trained in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols

  • Manage laboratory software

  • Maintain laboratory biosafety permits

  • Recommend changes to improve methods, procedures, and practices within the lab

  • Maintaining working relationships with stakeholders outside of the lab (e.g. servicing techs, vendors/salespeople, shipping/receiving staff etc.) for the lab's benefit

  • Work with personnel to ensure lab needs that arise are met. Perform other related duties as assigned

Inventory Management / Finance Reconciliation

  • Create and maintain an inventory management system for the lab

  • Act as the central point person in the lab for ordering consumables and other lab supplies

  • Track all laboratory orders and ensure they are processed and delivered in a timely fashion

  • Track all laboratory expenses and reconcile expenses onto the correct project account on a monthly basis

  • Maintain Annual Authorization Forms 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a Bachelor (or higher) degree in a biomedical field
  • Minimum 3 years experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably as a Lab Coordinator or Lab Manager
  • Demonstrative experience with lab inventory management (i.e., ordering and tracking supplies) is required
  • Previous experience maintaining laboratory records via digital notebooks is an asset
  • Previous experience reconciling finances, and managing budgets is an asset
  • Previous experience working with the University of Calgary, and familiarity with University systems (such as IRISS, PeopleSoft, eFIN) is an asset
  • Must be task and detail oriented, organized, and efficient, with strong time management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to foster and sustain productive working relationships
  • Strong computer skills are required (Microsoft Office, Dropbox, Slack, Zoom)
