The expected pay for this position is $7,500/month.

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a full-time 2-year appointment as a Research Associate in Structural Engineering with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and job performance. The anticipated start date is April 1st, 2025. The salary is $90,000/year.

This position strengthens the research functions in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. The Research Associate will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Developing earthquake-resilient components and systems, covering general buildings to critical facilities such as nuclear power plants
  • Planning and executing experiments on structural frames, members, or components
  • Conducting thorough investigations utilizing finite element analysis, with a preference for ABAQUS
  • Disseminating research findings through publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals
  • Liaising with stakeholders involved in the decommission project, including those related to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident
  • Engaging with practitioners and academics and working closely with research assistants, students, and highly qualified personnel to enhance the research by the Smart Structures Group

Applicants must meet the requirements below.

  • A Ph.D. degree in structural engineering or relevant disciplines
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license in Canada or the United States
  • Minimum of 10 publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals (at least five first-author publications)
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience relevant to the structural engineering field
  • Expertise in experiments on structural frames, members, or components
  • Experience with finite element analysis on composite structures, evidenced by publications using ABAQUS
  • Experience in organizing, coordinating, and managing research projects as evidenced by a minimum of five grant-based research programs worked as a PI
  • A clear understanding of the academic research process acquired through practical and academic experience
  • Former participation in decommissioning projects of nuclear power plants
  • Work experience in Asian regions related to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident project
