This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement , this position has an approximate appointment of one year and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $58,938 to $73,680.

Location - North campus. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person

Department summary

The Principal Investigator’s program of research aims to enhance knowledge about older adults’ experience of loneliness and social isolation and how it influences their use of health services. The position will be funded through professorship funds. The overarching goal of the professorship is to launch the Principal Investigator’s program of research and will involve grant writing and conducting a series of pilot and feasibility studies. 

Position summary

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will develop project protocols, implement and monitor project activities (ethics applications, data collection), and support the development of scientific outputs. The role will include developing grant applications to funding agencies (e.g., SSHRC, CIHR, Alzheimer’s Society of Canada) and preparing supporting materials for these applications including appendices, budgets, and letters of support. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills (oral and written). The ideal candidate will have advanced decision-making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A proven ability to work in a fast-paced research environment and meeting tight deadlines is key to the success of this position

Duties

  • Designs data collection protocols under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Oversees/conducts data collection activities (interviews and focus groups). Conducts advanced analysis of research data as appropriate.
  • Summarizes, analyzes and organizes data for publication. Participates in the writing of research papers, the preparation of presentations and/or other publications. May be considered as a co-author or presenter.
  • Assists in the preparation of research grant applications, including related administrative duties (e.g., preparing budgets, letters of support).
  • Foster communication with off-campus community partners.
  • Coordinate and manage team meetings.
  • May guide research assistants, and students

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Health or Social Sciences discipline is required for this position
  • Working knowledge and experience of Tri-Council funding applications
  • Proven experience publishing high quality peer-reviewed research
  • Ability to work independently as well as contributing to team development
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and ability to adapt to competing timelines
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Must have superior skills in MS Office
  • Must have experience using reference management software (e.g., Zotero, Mendeley)

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience conducting with research in older adults and health services is an asset
